THE MARKET: Will Alice Cooper’s upcoming album, “Along Came A Spider,” debut in the top ten of the Billboard 200 ? If it does, shares are worth $100. If it doesn’t, shares are worth $0. The album will be released on July 29. Trading closes at 11:59 p.m. August 2. The market will be cleared when Billboard releases new charts on August 6.
THE DATA: Despite positive critical reviews, Cooper’s 2005, “Dirty Diamonds,” was not a commercial success. However, despite limited success on the Billboard charts, his last three albums have done moderately well on the independent charts. Indeed Cooper seems to recognize his place in the musical hierarchy, with a tour consisting of mainly state fairs and casinos.
OUR TAKE: Critics appreciated that “Dirty Diamonds” returned to the time when Alice Cooper was the name of a band, not a solo artist. “Along Came A Spider” continues this trend, with Cooper’s stage band playing backup on the album. Cooper also pulls in his friend, Guns N’ Roses’ guitarist Slash, for an appearance on the track “Vengeance Is Mine.” The album combines solid musicianship with a sense of humor, (check the track called “(In Touch With) Your Feminine Side”) and has a storyline: a serial killer who’s terrified of, yet fascinated by, spiders. Is Cooper spinning something good?
