Can I borrow some makeup?

Post by Dannorama » Fri May 15, 2009 4:11 pm

Being something of a geek, I tend to notice these things...

That's Phil Collen on the left and Steven Tyler on the right. Both screen grabs are from officially released videos - "Rocket" and "Living on the Edge."

Have you ever seen anyone else of stature appering in Alice Cooper style makeup?

Tammy Faye doesn't count:

There's Brandon Lee, Adam Ant, Gene Wilder and the lead singer in Turbonegro, but it might depend on what you mean by "stature".

Adam Ant and Gene Wilder (in Something Wilder) were of course done on purpose ie impersonating Alice. I think Danno was more looking for things more like Brandon Lee and Turbonegro where it is less a tribute/impersonation then a (subconcious?) copy.

The Aerosmith thing is an interesting one, in that there are quite a few Alice-isms in some of their stuff. For example the 'Falling In Love (Is Hard On The Knees)' video has some definite Alice influences as well.

Wow. Turbonegro is obviously paying attention.

Didn't know about Gene Wilder. I'll look into it.

Si, you are right - I was kind of thinking about the totally unanticipated AC injection. Who'd expect it in the middle of an Aerosmith video?

Now that I think about it, there was a Buffalo Bills player named Ray Bentley who did his eye-black AC style in the early 90's. I recall an announcer pointing out that Ray was an "avid Alice Cooper fan."

For Gene Wilder's make up wearing, check out the TV show "Something Wilder" that Alice was on. All 3 parts of the episode are on youtube, and Si has them linked in SickthingsTV.

Pretty sure he's only got the make up on in part 3....otherwise towards the end of part 2.

It's a good episode. You should watch! :8):

On the back cover of his War & Peace album, Ice Cube is wearing black clown makeup on one of his eyes.

Er... so someone has told me.

Most likely not in relation to Alice's look.
If I may put forward a slice of personal colostomy...

The funny thing is that when I mentioned Wilder, I was actually thinking of a television interview Alice and Wilder did to promote "Something Wilder" (in the interview, you see Alice apply the make - up onto Wilder) rather than "Something Wilder" itself.

I see signs of Alice in so many things. :alice:
Look at this video of White Stripes - Blue Orchid.
You will find A Coat with Tails and Cane.

A video by Wolfmother, White Unicorn, or something with Unicorn in the title, has kinda like black marker drarwn on people throughout the vid. At some point the Alice make up is drawn on a fan.

And while not the make up, surely Slash on the bed holding the boa, has to be some sort of nod towards Alice (forget the song though).

I am surprised no one has mentioned the latest star to wear "the makeup": Lady Gaga!! She was on the Dancing with the Stars finale show last night and during her first number, she was wearing Alice makeup! Has anyone else noticed that Lady Gaga is parading around as the female Alice Cooper?

Thanks for the clip Danno.
Note: She is wearing the "makeup" in the second clip (Just Dance clip) and not the first clip (Love Game clip).
You think it looks like Special Forces? I think it looks more like the traditional makeup. Either way, very Cooperesque.

VERY Cooperesque indeed. I agree - it looks more like Classic Alice than SF. I was just playing with words.

I found another! Here's Nicole Richie, trying to improve her image:

I wonder when Nicole will go out and buy a snake too....

Your Special Forces comment was just a play on words. My bad! Thanks for clarifying. Do you think Lady Gaga will go out and purchase a guillotine?

I have read that a Finnish singer and songwriter called Hector performed in 1974 in a televised song contest, wearing a cape and the Alice make-up.

Years later, Hector did a Finnish cover version of "Only Women Bleed".
"A lot of people confuse me with Mel Gibson."
