Good AC cover songs.

Post by Dannorama » Wed Nov 20, 2024 11:07 pm

IMO, there has never been a good cover version of an Alice Cooper song. Many have tried, many have failed. (You simply can’t compete with the original.) Are there any really good AC covers that I’m missing?

Certainly not the best covers but ideal if you have a baby grandson staying over.

Twinkle Twinkle Little Rockstar covers of Eighteen and He’s Back…. Beat that!

I like the cover of Only Women Bleed by The Hangmen on the Welcome to Our Nightmare 2CD release better than the original. (TBH I've never really liked the original though)

Never found one I liked a lot, most are flat out "yuk", and part of that can be due to the fact that I just don't like the bands doing the covering.

Beasto did a decent Feed my Frankenstein, and Etta James did a nice Only Women Bleed. But yeah, unlike some other artists who lend themselves to covers, or find a great (Cash's "Hurt"), or unique paring (Devo doing "Satisfaction"), nobody matches the Alice originals to my ears.

Since Muscle of Love is in the news, I have just found this really nice cover of "Crazy Little Child", although it was recorded 4 years ago.

Agree with the OP. Haven't heard a cover of an Alice Cooper song that I particularly enjoyed (and some of my favourite artists have done covers eg Tori Amos).

Anthrax - Eighteen...Is decent if you like Kane Roberts Era Alice a lot, which I do.

Also I would not say a great cover but if you are a Motley fan then some Vince Neil Cold Ethyl to wet your whistle.

I think all round Humanary Stew was not a terrible album. If it was on vinyl I think I would pop it in my Alice collection and consider it Alice music canon regardless of the fact it is not, it just has a great line up.

I've always like The Sensational Alex Harvey Band version of School's Out, probably because of the spoken intro :)

I just remembered one cover that I like. Def Leppard doing "Elected." The crowd is definitely into it.

Joe Elliot is a big AC fan. I remember one of the Dublin theatre shows (2003?) he was up in a box enjoying the show. I believe he was living there at the time.
Not really on topic but you just reminded me of that.

Proof that we are being observed: I just got this album recommended on Spo***y. Never heard of it before. Is it European? Anyway, the song they recommended (two days after I whined about it here) was “Halo of Flies” with Dennis Dunaway and Dimma. Great all the way through, especially when he screams “FLIIIIIEEEEEEEESS!” Is this a cover? I say yes, and a damn good one.

Dimma are brilliant and brothers Ingo and Silli Geirdal are HUGE Alice Cooper fans. They've backed Michael Bruce on a few albums and live (Halo of Ice/Re-Cooperated etc), as well as working with Dennis on multiple occasions, including having him play on Dimma albums. They have also contributed to the Rhino reissues I believe.
I would recommend anyone to check out Dimma, especially their first album which has lots of Cooper-esque bits and pieces.
Some reviews I did on Dimma related albums.
https://www.sickthingsuk.co.uk/16-reviews/dimma.php
https://www.sickthingsuk.co.uk/16-reviews/dimma2.php
https://www.sickthingsuk.co.uk/16-reviews/stripshow.php

and the DD albums page has notes on various Dimma/DD collaborations:

A new version of 'Halo Of Flies' that was released on Dimma's 'Dogma' EP in 2011 (and later featured on 'Remember The Coop! A Tribute To Alice Cooper's Killer Classics').
Before Dimma the Geridal's had an Alice Cooper influenced band called Stripshow, and Dennis appears on their only album 'Late Nite Strip Show' performing on 'Here Comes The Spider'.
Dennis also performs on 'Desert Nightwish' from the band's 'Stigmata' album.
There's a version of Queen's 'We Will Rock You' with the band on 'Horse Feathers and Animal Crackers - A Tribute To Queen'.
There's also a recording of AC/DC's 'It's A Long Way To The Top' on an AC/DC tribute album 'It's a Bird, It's a Plane... It's a Main Man Records Tribute to AC/DC Powerage' featuring Dennis and Dimma.

Laughing Hyena do a great version of Public Animal Number 9. The first time I heard them I instantly knew the vocalist was influenced by Alice. He has another band called Easy Action with much more of a Detroit proto-punk sound

Alien Sex Fiend do a cool version of Scool's Out

Joan Jett's version of Be My Lover is pretty good

I guess technically Iggy's Love Transfusion is a cover, but the original has never been released

Julie Covington hit #12 in TheUK with a decent cover of “Only Women Bleed”. Around “77” I think

I actually like Creeds cover of Eighteen. Megadeth No More Mr Nice Guy is not bad either.

Thanks for the link. Your version sounds good too! I really appreciate how your singer sells it. Well done! (I'm learning that there are actually some good covers out there.)
