Alice interview in the notes & gets a mention on the new Zappa Archival release

Post by Toronto Bob » Thu Jul 18, 2024 6:31 am

Another fantastic archival release from the Zappa Family Trust "Whisky A Go Go 1968" and we get to hear FZ's on stage intro of Alice Cooper on that night of July 23, 1968 at the Whisky A Go Go. As well Ahmet Zappa interviews Alice included in the liner notes

"Thank you, teenagers. Okay, right now we're gonna have a special treat for you. The world famed Alice Cooper musical organization is going to, is going to come lunging up onto our bandstand and uh, plug into the amplifiers and do part of their amazing repertoire for you. For those of you who have not seen Alice Cooper before, you'll have a rare treat in store—they're really wonderful, they, they are very unusual, and some of the noises that they make— and pretty too, oh, are they pretty! Delightful. Pay close attention to what they do, they're a very creative group, they're gonna sock it towards you and everything. So if we can get them up here, we're gonna take a little break for a while . . ."

That's interesting. It sounds like Alice Cooper played DURING the Mothers show, rather than opening the show as you would naturally have assumed.

The FZ quote is at the end of Disc 1 after the song Valarie. Funny you can hear the same girl screaming that we hear on the AC Whisky A Go Go recording.

Yeah, I think other artists were dispersed throughout the evening as well. Wild Man Fischer and a guy named Joe Piresanti (who never recorded for Bizarre/Straight). I think it was like this 5-hour extravaganza. They would do something similar in December at the Shrine Auditorium with the GTO's also on the bill.

That makes sense. Never really thought about it before, but if you are an established artists yourself wanting to showcase your new acts, then getting them to play short sets during your own show is a good way to keep the audience around, as they will wait until you come back and continue.
