Mansions

Couple of questions:

1) While you guys were literally starving in LA you move into a Mansion in the Hollywood Hills that Cindy found. How the hell do you pull that off financially? Did Shep keep you guys out of sight when meeting with the landlord?

2) Do you remember what the rent was for that one and Mansion in Connecticut and whose names were on the lease?

Cindy found the Hollywood house.

The band Rhinoceros frequented the Inside Outside boutique where Cindy worked. They mentioned they were moving out of L.A. so Cindy got the contact information for their landlord, who was John Phillip Law who played the blind angel Pygar in the 1968 film "Barbarella" which was an influence for our stage costumes.

Rushton Moreve of Steppenwolf lived downstairs in the studio apartment so it wasn't a big deal for musicians to be living there.

The house was in disrepair - when it rained, Cindy had to place buckets around the house to catch dripping water. The guy that was in charge of repairing the house was a true Hollywood character. I pointed out a broken window and he said, Damn those glass-eating queens, and the window never got fixed.

Decades later, I ran into John Phillip Law and joked that we probably still owed him a lot of rent. He laughed and said he would let it slide.

The Galesi Estate in Greenwich, Connecticut was rented in Joe Greenberg's name. The landlord was, and still is, a mega real estate guy in the New York metropolitan area. His young nephew Jesse played guitar and pretty much came with the house. Jesse wanted the Rolling Stones to live there but that didn't work out so we showed up at the right time.

We had become headliners so paying the rent wasn't an issue. Paying late waasn't an option since Mr. Galesi had some strongmen to make sure that didn't happen.
