A Nonsense Question for the Weekend

Post by VinceRaven » Fri Nov 12, 2021 3:52 pm

Hey Dennis,

Myself and some friends were discussing songs that Elvis could have covered from various bands. When we got to the Alice Cooper group, it was my firm belief that Under My Wheels is the one he'd have done best.

Any thoughts on this trivia?

Thanks

I'm imagining Elvis singing "Under My Wheels" and of course, the King would have knocked it out of the park.
I can imagine him doing our version of "Hello Hooray". Perhaps "Workin' Up A Sweat" or even "You Drive Me Nervous" as well. Not many others would have fit his lyric requirements.

When we wrote "Is It My Body" it popped into my head that Tom Jones could have gotten a mega-hit with it, although I would have preferred Marilyn Monroe.

Thanks Dennis.

You've made good calls there.

I think I can especially picture him doing Working Up A Sweat. He certainly had enough musicians and singers backing him to really rip into it.

Perhaps we should mention artists that have covered our songs. I'll start by throwing out a few.
"Under My Wheels" - Foo Fighters live.
"School's Out" - John Lydon on the Masked Singer television show.
"Black Juju" - Lydia Lunch.
"Is It My Body" - Sonic Youth.
"Halo of Flies" - The Melvins & Meliah Rage.
"No More Mr. Nice Guy" - Pat Boone.

There are plenty more.

I've previously mentioned in this website - possibly elsewhere in this Forum - that I have a 2 CD release from the early 90's called Welcome to Our Nightmare which features various U.S. hardcore and alternative Groups and Artists covering ACG and AC solo songs. Black Juju with Lydia Lunch and Rowland S. Howard is on it.

The great thing (to me) about the release is that the entire 1st CD and almost half of the 2nd CD contain covers of ACG songs - about 70% of the songs on the album. I consider quite a few of the covers quite good (i.e. Caught in a Dream, Second Coming/Ballad of Dwight Fry) while others I don't rate too highly, but that doesn't surprise me.

Welsh band Manic Street Preachers did a version of Under My Wheels for a BBC session, which was subsequently used on a B-side.

The interesting footnote on this is that their top ten hit of the Theme from M.A.S.H.(Suicide is Painless) for a charity release of various bands doing cover versions of U.K. number one singles was a replacement for the rendition of School's Out that they originally wanted to do.

They decided against School's Out because, "We didn't want to be seen as an Alice Cooper covers band."

This is somewhat related to this thread - here's a link to The Lydia Spin Podcast which includes Lydia Lunch and I talking about her cover of "Black Juju."
