Alice At The Palace

Post by Coopenstein » Sun Oct 10, 2021 1:42 pm

Hello DD!
From what I understand, the "Alice At The Palace" project morphed into the "Billion Dollar Babies" stage show?
Was there any big differencies between the theatre show/BDB tour, and if so, how did they differ?
Who came up with the idea? What's was the reason it never happened? I'm interested in any info regarding this project...
Thanks!

If you search Alice at The Palace, you'll find insights on this site.
Broadway theaters need butts in every seat every night for a show to survive. Neil Diamond managed to pull off a Broadway Theater concert show in '72 but he had lots of mainstream hits and a safe image. But because of our controversial reputation, Alice at The Palace was viewed as a risky investment.

Joe Gannon worked on stage shows for Neil Diamond and for Liza Minelli. And then Joe was put in charge of the Billion Dollar Babies stage.

The differences between a theater show and a theatrical arena show are fairly obvious. In a theater, the back row can see subtle things that wouldn't work in an arena, especially since venues didn't have large screen projections of the live action back then.

Taking a theatrical rock show of that magnitude on the road was a new concept and a massive undertaking. And our ticket prices were comparable to band's that would show up and use whatever PA and lighting each venue and promoter supplied.
