Muscle of love expanded

Post by scotty » Sat Oct 26, 2024 12:24 pm

Hi Dennis
Was wondering if you knew the new muscle of love expanded release was coming out and if so , did rhino seek out opinions from you all? Looking over the track list I was hoping that they would have included the neal smith composition “ don’t stop “ I’ve always read was under consideration but didn’t make the album. I assume it at least had a demo ? Maybe it made it onto one of neals solo ventures?

I was notified that the release was coming after Warner/Rhino had already decided what songs would be included. "Baby Please Don't Stop" would have been nice, as well as "School's Back In" but perhaps someday. Brian Kehew did a great job restoring and mixing the outtakes that were available though.

The legendary rock journalist Jaan Uhelszki of Creem magazine fame interviewed Michael, Neal, Alice, and I for memories about each song. Those are included in the new release.

I had suggested changing the song order to match the list on the original outer album cover but they had already mastered the new release in the original song order. The lists are different because the box cover required extra time to prepare for production and the record company needed a list of songs before the final song order had actually been decided.

Give the other song order a listen. It gives the overall album a fresh feel. In my opinion, it's better.

Thanks for this thread/asking your questions, scotty. I've heard a demo of Neal's song, 'Baby Please Don't Stop', which was originally to be recorded for inclusion on the MOL album but instead ended up on Neal's solo album 'Platinum God'. As an FYI Neal's album is being given a 50th Anniversary re-release at this time.

Dennis - I will absolutely listen to the original song order - that sounds like fun to hear it as it was originally intended.

Ted - thanks for the info , I’ll have to check out the finished track off “ platinum god “

Hey Dennis,

I've now given the alternate order a couple of listens, and I agree that it works better.

I reckon listening to it on vinyl would also have been greatly enhanced by flipping back from Teenage Lament at the end of side two to Muscle of Love at the start of side one. The sort of hook that encourages the listener to do it all over again.

I would have loved it if the new pressing had gone with this order of tracks.

I don't have the deluxe yet.

I've had the email saying it's been shipped, but I'm in Scotland, so it won't arrive too soon.

I only ordered the vinyl.

What I was saying is that I made a digital playlist in the track order Dennis suggested and I think it works very well.

My package was delivered while i was at a gig for hardcore superstar and south of salem. So when i got back i had to have a quick listen and i listened to it properly today. The second disc is awesome. The early/alternate versions are brilliant and i prefer several of them to the finished products. A bit odd to not include some other stuff that was from the time but include single edits of the two singles. but that gripe aside its brilliant. I dont enjoy MOL much as an album at all (never have) but hearing the original/early versions make me appreciate some of it allot more.
The acoustic teenage lament is a real gem!
But why would such a brilliant package only get a limited release from rhino themselves and not see a wide release?

That's a good question, although it IS available via Warner Brothers stores in Australia and Canada, and, it seems, from normal outlets (like Tower Records) in Japan.
I don't understand why it isn't the same in the European/UK store. What have we done wrong!

Absolutely love the peeled back versions, almost like having a new OG’s album. Brilliant notes from all concerned too. Always said this was a much underrated album. Loved it when released back in the 70’s, love it even more now 10/10 for this reissue

Agree 100%-I got MOL 48 years ago and have loved it since. This re-issue only increases the affection.

Just received the CD version of Muscle Of Love expanded. I haven't stopped playing it since I got it a few days ago. I love the Disc 2 w/ the early/Alt versions. It's like hearing a whole new album! I love Alice's echo vocals on Crazy Little Child version and Neal's drumming. I never knew Neal didn't play on the studio version. Have to say I like Neal's version it so raw and heavy sounding. I wonder why Alice didn't attempt the harmonica on Working Up a Sweat? He harped on previous albums. I hope if they release any more albums like Love It To Death they include a 2nd disc just like this. Unfreakin' Amazing!
