Re: Mysterious voice on "You Drive Me Nervous"

Yes, it was our sound man Artie King. He had a natural deep voice that seemed to vibrate the rafters when he barked out orders to the road crew. The concept was inspired by Eddie Cochran's "Summertime Blues" where the voices of authority are low timbered. Artie mixed sound for several tours includin...

Re: Bootlegs!!

In the analog days of recording, the vast majority of acts did all they could to prevent people from recording at concerts, and to curtail rehearsal tapes and studio outtakes from leaking, although there were bands like the Grateful Dead and Metallica (I think) that encouraged it and it greatly buil...

Do you think there’s any possibility of any of the other albums receiving a similar treatment?
Over the years, there has been insider news of releases that didn't happen so I'm reluctant to say.
I'm pretty sure the success of these releases will determine the value of other releases.

Re: "SO" and "Killer" Expanded editions

Out of interest Dennis what happened to “Schools Back In” ? I thought "School's Back In" was going to be included but I guess it didn't make the final picks. Likely due to the quality. it wasn't really a song. We were just warming up and goofing around and they recorded it. The jam was based on a 3...

Re: "SO" and "Killer" Expanded editions

Both releases have taken longer than expected. I heard the restoration of the Mar e Sol concert early on. It was done by someone with integrity. The band participated in extensive interviews about the recording sessions and the live shows, all intricately detailed and expertly written by the legenda...

It was a quick way to eliminate the "thumb" without paying for, and waiting for, an artist to touchup the photo.

Re: Michael Allen's book

Mike has stories that haven't been told and he tells them in a personable humorous way.
How close was he? So close that, at the Topanga Canyon house, he shared the same small one room bedroom with Neal, Cindy (Smith) and Alice.
I read the early draft and look forward to reading the finished book.

Re: New ideas for theatrics

Unlimited budget would be nice but set-up and take-down time, shipping, and safety are always factors, not to mention bottom line profit over costs. That said, I do have some grand scale ideas but they will remain secret just in case I ever get an unlimited budget. I will say that surrealistic dream...

Re: Credits Again!!

I might add that Pretties For You was a direct result of my initial intention to start a band based on artistic ideas. The music nor the stage shows were aimed at traditional commercial success. We wanted to gain notoriety for being unique. Alice was on my side but try talking a sarcastic rebel and ...

Re: Credits Again!!

You're correct on those 3 songs. Pretties For You was so spontaneous that it's difficult to assign who did what. Most of our albums had that element but to a more definable extent. Who brought the initial idea to the rehearsal room based on memory from 1968. My original hand written lyric books show...

Re: School's Out album cover

Those songs made the album despite not fitting the concept because we didn't have enough time (2 albums that year plus heavy touring) to fully realize the album's goal and because we had to go with the best songs. There were also songs that got new lyrics in order to make them fit the concept. One w...

Re: School's Out album cover

Yep, there's the dog on his shirt. For Pretties for You Zappa bumped our idea of having Dali's Geopolitical Child as our album cover. The concept was a surreal band being born. Easy Action Neal's idea of having us turn our backs on the camera for the front cover and then have the back cover reveal t...

Re: School's Out album cover

This might be disappointing news but I think Pacific Eye and Ear did all of the carving. As I recall, the dog was intended to be a foreshadowing announcement of another forming company but it never happened. I'm sure that Ernie could give us a clearer story on that. I've always thought that I had su...

Re: Do overs?

Jack Richardson was a fine bass player before he became a Producer. If even one of my bass notes needed fixed, he insisted that I re-record the entire track from beginning to end. He would say, you're going to be playing this song a lot so one more time won't kill you. That was the rule for the albu...

Re: Do overs?

Ok, you've worked hard enough on this.
At 3:34, under I gotta get outta here, I go up to the note that would begin the chorus, then retreat, then in a quick attempt to make it sound like I knew what I was doing, I play a slide into the chorus.

Re: Do overs?

Is it the very first bass note? If so, then Ezrin was right. I’m glad you didn’t redo that. I always loved the way you played that note, and thought you did it on purpose. Or- I could be wrong! Wouldn’t be the first time. (:40 seconds into the track. I can explain my reasoning.) That's not it but I...

Re: Blue Coupe

We've opened for Alice several times.
Whenever we get a decent offer, we consider it.
As far as getting back to the point where I have the Holiday Inn menu memorized, I'm not missing that.
Blue Coupe's favorite shows are Opera Houses and festivals, although we play our best in any room.

Re: Do overs?

I only think about that immediately after the producer says I nailed it. Probably because up until that point, every take is me trying my best to improve on every take. Then, once that finality is declared, I accept it and move on to making the next song better. Now that I think about it, there is ...

Re: Surround sound mixes

I was in the studio when Jack Richardson and Jack Douglas did the quad mixes. Because of the very limited amount of people that had quad systems, Warner Bros. budget for quad was slim. It was done in a rush. I rarely listen to those albums because I'm always working on new music. I care about our re...
