Was Trash preferred by the Female Fans?

Post by glamprincess » Mon Jul 07, 2008 1:48 pm

I notice that some Alice fans really dislike Trash even though it was Alice's big comeback and a major commercial success. But I've also noticed over the years that a lot of female fans (including myself) really liked Trash. So was the "sexy" Trash album liked more by female fans? Was it more the male Alice fans that really disliked this album?

I think that's a really good point. The negative comments that I've heard about Trash have always come from men (I genuinely cannot think of any negative comments that I've heard from female fans), though a lot of those comments have been along the lines of them disliking it because it's "not an Alice album". I of course really like it and it remains one of my favourites in the collection.

I think Trash was made for the ladies and the ladies love it.
I actually prefer the sexy songs on Hey Stoopid, but I think Trash
accomplished exactly what it set out to do.
And the costumes, of course, were fantastic.

I also prefer Hey Stoopid.
I can't say that the sexiness in Trash left me indifferent, far from it :) but it's not my favourite Alice album. I like the heavier stuff more. Or then the early albums.

But I think Hey Stoopid will always have a special meaning for me because that's when I became a fan.

I watched the Trash video a thousand times back then though  I just watched it again recently, kind of strange to think I am the same age Alice was on this... my how time passes.

I'm not one of the Trash haters. I don't care for some of the songs, but it is like that with any of the albums. I do prefer Hey Stoopid also because that is when I became a fan.

It's not my favourite Alice album either. But that wasn't the point that I was trying to make. I was making the point that almost all the female fans that I've discussed Trash with seem to have a really positive view of Trash. Whereas on the other hand, there are many male fans who dislike Trash and even rate it one of Alice's worst albums.

Thanks.
As I said earlier, there seems to be a lot of male Alice fans who dislike Trash and were disappointed by it. But I've also rarely encountered a female Alice fan who feels that way. In fact, many female fans have posted that they would like stuff like Bed of Nails or House of Fire, etc. to be included in tour setlists. And the female fans seem to really LOVE all the Trash videos!
I've also heard male fans say that they felt it "wasn't an Alice album". But I disagree with them to a large extent. Sexually-themed songs were often explored by Alice prior to Trash and the Muscle of Love album had sex as its underlying theme too. I guess some male fans didn't feel Trash was "dark" and "heavy" enough for an Alice Cooper album. But it seems that the female fans were happy to have the sexy songs (and videos).

I wasn't a big Trash fan for a while, but over the past seven or so years I've grown to appreciate it. It's a very classy album so I can see how the ladies would like it. Not saying we men aren't classy too, now. :nono:
If I may put forward a slice of personal colostomy...

If you're on the maidens list you'll see people say they love a lot more weirder stuff than that... not that I would know first hand or anything.

Trash was a disappointment for me at first after RYFAY (listened to em all chronologically) cos it wasn't as dark but I still liked it. It's one of me mum's top 5 favourites so it gets played pretty often in our house, I've also had it on me mp3 player a fair bit recently. I think I've come to like it more over time, I love Poison, Bed of Nails and I'm Your Gun, they've always been among me favourite Alice songs.

I have noticed the female fans seem to love it, good observation glamprincess.

Trash is a real good Bon Jovi style rock album. I love it, but it is not an Alice Cooper album. It is one of the Desmond Child albums.

I like Trash. I think it's a solid album from start to finish.
On the other hand a lot of people think I'm a very girly guy :p.

I was just messing of course.

On to your point, I would like to expand on what you said earlier. I think a lot of this could have to do with the appeal and the music scene at the time, which IMHO, was targeting women as their demographic. Alice, a hard rock act in the 70s, was now about the "hair band/sex" theme of the late 1980s that we saw a lot of then. The ballads, the sappy content, the "sleazy" feel may have appealed more to women (ladies I hope you don't take that the wrong way.) I'm sure that can apply to guys to an extent.

"Only My Heart Talking" is sang by a man, and likely will be assumed or generalized as being sung about a woman.. so girls probably felt it was Alice singing these songs to them. Another case in point to him "targeting" these songs towards women, is even during the live shows he picks women out in the audience for "Poison." While I know many guys who like the song, it probably just sticks out to women more though as they feel these songs are to them? I think this might be why women may like the album a lot more than guys to.

I think you may see this with Aerosmith fans as well for instance.. more guys probably like the earlier 70s stuff, while more women will like the stuff of their 1980s material like "Love In An Elevator" stuff? (That doesn't rule out one not liking the other of course.)

I hope I don't sound like I'm sexist or anything, my intentions are very far from it with what I am meaning to say and am sorry if what I said is taken the wrong way.
And hmmm.....I wonder now if male fans are lurking on the Maidens List.....?:rotfl:

for a young teenager in liverpool it was so uncool to listen to alice in anyway shape or form and got a lot of flack for it (not giving a sh!t for it as i see true genius) however when poison came out in the summer of 89 he was the coolest guy around and loved by all. the man is truly underated.
i'm guilty an i think i've been framed anyway

In a very sing-songy voice..........Hated Itttt!.........two snaps and a shake.

Seriously though....IMO it was a terrible album. It barely, if ever, gets played. My wife loves Poison....uhh.....whatever makes her happy and allows me to listen to better Coop stuff....I will tolorate.
