“82”

Post by jacknifejohnny » Sat Dec 19, 2020 12:17 pm

Pretty sure Big Country were the support band when I saw the concert at the Birmingham Odeon on that “82” tour, for the life of me I can’t remember who the support band at the Hammersmith Odeon was and I went to all 3 of them ? Sure a lot of you were there. Can only think we must’ve stayed in the boozer till the main act . Did look in the history, but couldn’t find it. This just goes back to a conversation I had with a mate about if we ever saw Big Country in their heyday.

I'll always remember the end of Shaphire's set at Glasgow. The singer said words to the effect of "I love you Glasgow. I love you so much I'm going to leave you my jacket" at which point he took off his patch-covered denim jacket and threw it into the audience near me. It landed directly on the lap of a fairly young kid who just stared down at it for a few moments as a longhaired bloke in the row behind reached over and grabbed it.

The cynic in me believes he was just after the patches.

It's been pointed out that for YEARS I've had the bands name misspelt!
It's "Sapphire".

And here was me wondering where they got the odd name from.

I’ve just listened to the Glasgow 82 Lp ago finally got a copy. Loved it. Along with the original group this is my favourite Alice period. I’ve got a boot of the show too but this was well worth adding to my collection.

If I remember correctly the singer at the Glasgow gig said "don't worry Alice will be on soon" because he was getting so much grief from the audience.

Those of us at the gigs in '82 can now relive the support act thanks to everything in history being somewhere on YouTube. Here's the A and B sides of their one and only single.
