Finally - The Nightmare special official on dvd
At last after many many years the TV special from 1975 - The Nightmare will get a release on dvd.
It's an advance Japanes release with The live show from Wembley + the tv special on one dvd.
I don't know anything if it will be available in the rest of the world but I guess it will be.
Releasedate 30th of august.
GREAT NEWS.
Here's the link for the Japanese edition.

The former only, I think.

Would the quality of the original footage really justify a Blue-Ray?A_MichaelUK wrote:From Daggers & Contracts:

I don`t really know about the technicalities but weren't both recorded for TV shows, and possibly on video not film, so wouldn't a blue-ray be exactly the same as a normal DVD in terms of quality anyway?

From Si:
"Would the quality of the original footage really justify a Blue-Ray?"
That was the issue that came up before when we previously looked at the source which was then available and it was decided that there was no justification. I don't know exactly which source is being used this time but the last time I checked, it was a high quality analogue source but not the master recording and if that's the case, then the same probably applies.

Thank mestreech for this news.
I'm Japanese, but I didn't know this information.
I'm very surprised because Alice is not popular in Japan.
Anyway,WTMN is the greatest album in rock history for me,
and The Nightmare special film is most favorite rock film along with
WTMN live footage.
Below is Amazon Japan link.

Re: Finally - The Nightmare special official on dvd
Don`t forget that as Andy has already stated this WILL be released in the UK, US and everywhere else, and I believe on the same date, so unless you are in Japan you'd probably be better off waiting until it is listed locally (and then buy through the STUK links )sumorider wrote:Thank mestreech for this news.

You saying that made me do the math... It has probably been 30 years since I saw the TV special in its entirety. Back then, I miraculously found the VHS for rent at an independent video store in Elmira, NY. You can see the VHS tape cover here. I will be interested to see how this has aged. I am old enough to remember when it was going to be broadcast for the first time on TV. Many ABC-TV stations across the nation (including my local affiliate) refused to air it that night. Alice was far too controversial for their delicate sensitivities. I remember that the decision to ban it locally was mentioned in our newspaper. I can't seem to find any documentation of this occurring, but trust me, it did.
I believe that this will be another must-buy for me. My poor bank account this summer!

Re: Finally - The Nightmare special official on dvd
This should be worthwhile and it doesn't matter a bit if there's no blu ray version. Original tv show shot on 1975 technology video and the concert shot on 16mm film and then blown up to 35 mm. There are no quality enhancements that blu ray can bring.

To be honest it has dated quite a bit. Nice to see it out though.

Re: Finally - The Nightmare special official on dvd
Sorry I didn't go into detail about my query. My Blu-Ray player has issues w/DVD's. Not horrible but frequent drop outs where I eventually turn the whole thing off & re-start the player. Then it runs fine for awhile - sometimes. Don't have the issues w/Blu-Rays.Si wrote:Would the quality of the original footage really justify a Blue-Ray?A_MichaelUK wrote:From Daggers & Contracts:

You are correct about the quality of the picture but at least 5.1 Surround would be a fine addition also.

Re: Finally - The Nightmare special official on dvd
I always thought Good to See You Again was shot on 16mm and blown up to 35mm. Was that the case with the Nightmare concert film as well? I saw a 35mm print of it in LA last October, and besides the color being faded, it didnt look like it was a 35mm blow up to me. The TV special was definitely shot on video.Toronto Bob wrote:This should be worthwhile and it doesn't matter a bit if there's no blu ray version. That's because Blu-ray players have two lasers inside: a red laser for reading CDs and DVDs, and a blue laser for reading Blu-rays. They read different wavelengths.
Sounds like your player's red laser is (going) bad.
Players are pretty cheap these days....

Lovely to hear that it's finally coming out ! Great shame that the original master tapes can't be used though.

It's a Sony and not a very expensive one in the 1st place. From the beginning it had these issues. Maybe an upgrade is in order. Pretty much just stopped buying DVD's & focused on Blu-Ray - both formats hit the bargain bin eventually!
