Alice's best vocal performance?

Post by JoeyBananagoose » Sat Jun 03, 2017 12:46 am

Just a general thread. What's your thoughts?

I think both in terms of range and character, Hello Hooray is hard to beat. He sounds heroic, untouchable, possessed and like an absolutely deranged egomaniac set out to destroy everything that isn't him because it's not up to his standards. Fantastic stuff.

Any specific moments perhaps? "I have other uses for you, darling" is about the sickest he ever sounded.

Anyway, over to youse guys.

"Might as well be on Mars" comes to mind.

What he said. My second choice is "Billion Dollar Babies." Pure Alice, and that scream in the middle is shattering.
Move aside, mere drop of water - let the ocean pass.

Agreed completely. I hope one day Alice's camp recognises how well loved this song is by the die hards and throws us a bone. The 'we'd need an orchestra' or whatever nonsense just doesn't wash. You could give Ryan Roxie an acoustic Gibson and I'd bet my bottom dollar he could come up with an amazing arrangement in under an hour.

P.S. I always thought the absolute key - the moment of genius in MAWBOM is when he seems to come in early on one of the last choruses (though it's clearly part of the arrangement). Around the 4 and a half minute mark. It gives it such a loose, unhinged almost improvisational feel. Some obsessive lover who just needs to get this off his chest or he's going to lose it big time.

That song sounds very dated now.

"Might as well be on Mars" comes to mind.
That's a good shout definitely - His voice is hard to say what makes a great vocal performance (not the worlds best singer) - his sneer? his sexuality? his power and aggression? his heartfelt pleas? I love shades of all of it

A selection would be :
pass the gun around
Wind up toy
Cleansed by fire
How you gonna see me now
billion dollar babies (although the Donovan counterpoint is what really makes this tune blaze for me)
Roses on white lace
pick up the bones
Schools out
Poison

I always thought I love the Dead was a pretty good vocal outing for him.

The first song that comes to my mind is Hard Hearted Alice. Alice's vocal delivery in the first part of the song demonstrates one of his greatest assets he brought to the Group: his vocal prowess.

Desperado.

I'll throw a curveball and go for Die For You.

I also highly rate his vocals on Stolen Prayer and Is Anyone Home.

Halo Of Flies
The way he screams Flies as the song really begins to Rock is awesome!

Disgraceland... ;)
Nah, but I like it. And believe it or not, at 63 I think Alice's vocals is top-notch on W2MN.
Best vocal performances over the years:

Hello Hooray
I Love The Dead
Hard Hearted Alice
Crazy Little Child
Steven
Give The Kid A Break
Wake Me Gently
King Of The Silver Screen
Pass The Gun Around
Stolen Prayer
I Gotta Get Out Of Here
