I think it's a really fun album to listen to. The reviewer of Operation Mindcrime 2 really says it all regarding part 2's:

"The argument is why you would want to create a second chapter of something and have it sound so much like the first. Okay, there's the music and story. Tate and company are to be credited here; the story is seamless, though it is 20 years later."

The reviewer acknowledges that a seamless story works well in a part 2 with the same type of musical arrangements but also acknowledges that time has passed. Like anything in life, when time passes, things change and cannot/should not be replicated to what happened previously. If this direct sequel took place within 5 years of the original, there;s reason to make it sound like the original. But in this one, Steven must be in his 40s (While still retaining his 10 year old boy persona in a few tracks). Disco turns to rap, dance music haunts him and his 9-5 day in a cubicle fusturates the hell out of him.

What I admire Alice for doing is trying his best to satisfy fans who expect him to write a "direct sequel" to the Steven character and fans who expect something new, interesting and innovative, as he has done throughout his career. There may not be any "standout tracks" like "Steven" or "The Black Widow" but those kind of standout tracks were established in part 1. A continuity should be free flowing without establishing anything else, since the majority of the Steven character has already been established.

Part 2 is a more realistic interpretation of what Steven's dream is now, as opposed to WTMN, which is a showcase of a nightmare a 10 year old boy would have. Kids have way more imaginative dreams than adults. (Though I can't speak for all, since we each have a different imagination that guides our own nightmares). But the majority of the cases, kids think about way more creepy crawly stuff in their lives that make the nightmare seem more epic/scarier. Adults usually have work (A Bad Situation), love (Something to Rememember Me By), dreams/desires (Last Man on Earth) and past memories (The Underture) that may keep them dreaming. I think W2MN has incorporated those very well, in a realistic and imaginative manner.

After listening to the album for a while now, it's downfall is how humourous it is. When A Runaway Train begins right up until the end of Ghouls Gone Wild, it's very catchy and fun. Then When Something to Rememember Me By Comes in, it kinda kills all the mood. After that you have a rollercoaster of different types of music. If there was a bit more horror mixed in near the beginning, I think we all would appreciate Something To Rememember Me By a lot more. Or if he wanted to include the ballad, it should have a bit of fun/catchy humour that came with it. Then again, it wouldn't really be a proper Alice ballad.

Anyway, I think it's a great album and Alice has to be given credit for the right moves he has pulled out, which are many. Album's are based on perspective. If W2MN is looked at from a "time passing" perspective, it works really well.

It would be cool to see a "midquel" though. What happened to Steven before he was in the prison in Along Came a Spider? What happened 15 years after the original Nightmare? It could be a real gem in the discography that could bridge the gap between part 1 and part 2 and make people go....oh...so thats why you made it sound like that. Maybe it's a bit much since it's going forward then backward again, but it's Alice. He could do it. :alice:

These are nice to look at, but what does a 0 represent and what does a 10 represent? What are the guidelines used in your scoring?

Is a 10 on one of these songs, the same as a ten, you would give to 'Eighteen'? Is a zero the same zero you might give to 'Ubangi Stomp'? Or is a zero for a track on W2MN equivalent to a recording of Yoko Ono doing a duet with a sick cat? Is a 10 the equivalent of Mozart's Symphony No. 40 in G Minor?

Guidelines please

Ho ho, I didn't think I was starting a new game, that's cool :alice:
GNDM, my votes are just the expression of my personal taste.
While I perfectly know and understand that a Mozart Symphony would deserve a much higher vote than any pop song on earth, it may not be what I like to listen to. But I think it does not make sense to compare two such different things when it comes to give a little number just for the fun of it.
Also, about the "10" I would give to I'm Eighteen, I may add that that song has been around for 40 years and therefore it has established its value as a classic song. These new songs have been released only a month ago, so RIGHT NOW I rate them up there with the classics, but I cannot tell where they'll be in 40 years.

I don't think Alice has ever done a 0 a few 2's maybe. It's all subjective of course. I really will never have a definitive answer and really it can all change from day to day.

My guidelines are just comparing it with other solo material. Anything over an 8 I would like to be concert material.

I'll start...

The AutoTune Song - 10
CaFfEiNE CaffEine - 8
The "Steven" Ripoff - 9
A Dunaway Train - 7
Bugsy Malone on Crack - 10
Oasis Cover -9
The Stones Song - 9
Disco - 7
Ghouls Gone Wild - 6
Donny Osmond on Crack - 5
The Band Song - 9
That song with that Blonde ***** - 9
Gotta Get Outta Here - 9

Overall a very good album. I think would be a lot more consistent without "Disco Blood Bath," "Ghouls," and "Something to Remember Me By," and instead, "Under The Bed" in their place (or at least somewhere, a very good song that was deserving of more than a bonus track in my humble opinion, but it's not up to me.)

This, in my opinion, is how a modern Alice Cooper album SHOULD sound like. Not a classic like the original, although some classic moments like "Last Man on Earth" and "I Am Made of You."

Blood Red Vinyl on it's way. Slightly expensive to import but way cheaper then the bay sellers. glad universal still has them. I have the US version as well So I can compare them and see if the transfers are different at all.

I may frame the blood red version
