When you first met Alice

Post by Gunner » Fri Aug 19, 2011 10:38 am

This may have been done before - can't be bothered checking, to be truthful - but, who has a story of meeting Alice? This topic was inspired from a comment made by Andy - on a different thread - relating to first meeting Alice.

I'll start;

Unfortunately, mine is not a very 'natural' meeting, but here goes anyway;

I met Alice at Virgin megastore, London, UK (don't think it's there now!) on November 24th 1986, he was doing a signing session. We were all waiting in a queue outside the store and Cooper was late (he had played Wembley the night before and I had gone) - eventually this white limo pulled up right outside the entrance to the store. Cooper got out and Kane was acting as bodyguard (well, it looked like it for sure), it was difficult to see, but I heard someone in their party say 'Sorry wer'e late, we got caught in traffic' - it might have been Shep, I really don't know. Anyway, I shouted from half way back in the queue 'ALICE!!! What are you doing here??' in the Vincent Price manner and I saw Alice lift his arm in ackowledgement of the cry. I eventually made it to the desk where he was signing, he struggled to get to grips with my rather 'non-American' Christian name, but he was very polite, charming and so was Kane. Somebody beside me pushed a mic (with tape recording) into Alice face and said "Alice say something!!", to which Alice replied "Something!", "Nah, say something else!!" came the reply "Something else!!" Alice answered, he was clearly the quick witted individual he was cracked up to be.

I met Alice at the Rue Morgue Festival Of Fear as part of the Fan Expo in Toronto. The first time was during a very unorginized assembly line like autograph session. While in line I asked one of the Hobbystar (they run the event) security if I could take a picture with Alice and he replied that it was up to Mr. Coopeer. So when the time came and it was my turn I thanked Alice for all the entertainment over the years and shook his hand. I asked if I could get a picture with him and he gladly accepted. Just as Alice posed for the pic another one of the Hobbystar workers rushed over saying "no, no, no" and informed a surprised Alice that he wasn't supposed to take pictures with th fans because there was a special $50 photo op thing to be held later that evening in a different location.

So later on we wen't to the room and got our picture with Alice. This time we got to chat with Alice for a few minutes and it was like talking to an old high school friend or something. When the photographer asked us to move a litle closer together for the pic Alice joke to me about only knowing each other for a few minutes lol We were told to come back the next day to pic up the picture (either that or they would mail it, but I wasn't taking the chance) so the next day when we returned to get the picture it wasn't at the room they said it would be. I was freaking out and asking around but none of the Hobbystart staff seemed to know. Finally after at least an hour me and some other people having the same problem found the room. It wasn't even on the same floor they said it would be, but it worked out in the end. The pic of me an Alice can be found here http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set= ... 491&type=1

Met Alice a few time's now, but first time was in Edinburgh during the constrictor tour. My friend and I (about nineteen at the time) went to forth radio where Alice was getting interviewed. We told the girl we were reporters from the paisley daily express (fictional). Amazingly she told us to wait in the room as Alice would be finished in a moment. Hurridly we wrote down some questions we could ask him. We hear over the speakers as the interview was finished and then the great man appearerd. the receptionist shouted "Mr Cooper these boys want to interview you" and in true wayne's world fashion the power of speech left us completely. I ran over and shook his hand telling him how brilliant he was while my pal just stood stuttering. We did manage to get a photo taken tho which my pal got made into a t-shirt for me (long gone I'm afraid).

I can copy the story of gunner as I was also there.
Had a great time in London before the show / the show itself and after the show. And the next day the signing session. I did meet a lot of Sickies and I know we had a drink in my hotel at Piccadilly circus.

This was also my first time I met Brian Nelson in person after a long penpal friendship.
Alice signed a few items for me and thanks to Brian he did an attemp to kill me (for the picture).

The sad part of this story is that when I got home I still was so excited that I ripped out the photo cartridge to bring it to the shop. But I broke a piece of it and the result was that one photo was destroyed and yes it was the photo of Alice strangled me.
That's life. What a bummer!!

Well, this isn't exactly about the first time I met Alice, but it has a connection.

[First, let me say that I was not always a big Alice Cooper fan...I sort of married into it in 1990.]

At one of the first Glen Buxton Memorials, I was sitting by the pool at the hotel with a bunch of AC fans - none of them I knew, and I don't think any of them knew me. One fan was telling everyone how many AC concerts he'd been too and how he had traveled around the southwest following Alice's tour bus..finally getting to meet him in a parking lot. After he was done telling his story, he looked at me and asked if I had ever meet Alice. I said yes - once. He then asked how many concerts I had been too.I said - one. The look on that poor guys face was priceless. He asked if I had meet him backstage, I said - yes. I saw him walk away and while he was talking to some other people, I saw him point in my direction. I felt kind of bad, like I had done something wrong, and hadn't "paid my dues" and still got to meet Alice himself.

Years latter, Janice and I still laugh about the guy with the sad and startled look...since that clown is the one who is still holding onto the gb domain.

PS...I still feel "not worthy" when I hear the trials and tribulations fans go through to meet Alice and the original guys....I guess to them I stumbled and fell butt first into something I didn't 'work' for.

onstage Sheffield 1988 during Under My Wheels, we didn't speak I just put my arm around my hero and raised the other fist and yelled, I was covered in fake blood from Dead Babies earlier in the show but my Mascara was still visible. I then left the stage before security got a hold of me, the petulance of youth.

First proper meeting was the London book signing for Golf Monster, they say you should never meet your heroes but i've always found them to be great people. Michael, Dennis and Neal were top guys too but nothing beats singing backing vocals on School's Out with Michael at his first Camden gig and the nicest guy you could meet. Wish I could have met Glen.

Brilliant stephen. At the last gig my friend brought along two young girls who didn't really know too much about Alice and THEY were picked to be two of the ghouls on stage, we were gutted lol. On a related subject of youthful impetuosity, my friend, Gary, was waiting to meet kiss after a Glasgow gig, many years ago, and paul stanley appeared, blonde in tow, and ignored the fans and got into his limo, the bold Gary jumped headlong into the car just as it drove away. Stanley (very angry)"Who the f%*k are you man?", Gary replies "I'm Gary, and if you sign my jacket I'll get out your car" Stanley then signs the jacket, tells him where to go and Gary gets out the limo to wild applause from those watching. Classic.

I met Alice two times. First, on the Monster Mania Convention 2009. It was great, I met Michael on the day I arrives in NJ, he was on the same hotel as mine, in the room in front of mine! We had really much to talk about, he told me histories from Brazil, from the road, etc. We even went to the bar a few times, and he tried to hook me up with some girl!
He was the only one playing at the convention and I have all the lyrics from the rehearsals, as Bob gave it to me (his vocalist).
Than, when the convention started, I met Alice. I was shacking so much I couldn't even speak clearly. My luck was that the person who was picking up the money for the autographs started to talk to me, and I told I went from Brazil to meet Alice. I got my things autographed, and left. On the way out of the room, I met Sheryl, who is really NICE, sweet, talked to me and took a picture.
I went down and met Dennis and Neal.
On the last day I bought a birthday present to Mike (a pocket bottle with his name, the date and a happy birthday from his brazilian fans engraved). Than I went to Alice's desk and while I got my autographs the person who picked up the money told I am from Brazil, and Alice started to talk about the tour here in 2009, than even called Neal to chat a bit!
I asked for a picture with the whole band, and he asked me to wait till the end of the session, as it would make a real fuzz. I waited, Neal made a fell jokes and pretended to play drums, than Dennis called me (one of the sweetest guys I have ever met, really a Big fun o him, loved the guy) and we talked about his album, Bones from the Yards, how he recorded it, he told me he still have some stuff he bought here in 74!
Than I took my picture with the Band, asked for an autograph in my Leather Jacket, witch has the four members autographs, and left again, The next day I came back to Brazil, talked a bit with Mike before I left and that was it.

The next Time I saw him was this year on the meet and great at São Paulo. It was a little better 'cause I wasn't so nervous.
I talked to him a little bit, my make up was so messed up Alice told me I was a little dirty  I told it was because I cried for the first three songs in a row, and we started chatting a little. He told me he picked up Black Widow and Brutal Planet to start the show so that everyone could see the power of the three guitars.

Than he started to sing my uncles stuff (who was there with me) and I had my Love's a Loaded Gun, my welcome to my nightmare and my Picture with him and the band that I took in NJ. He saw that on the table, stopped to sing my uncles sutff and asked where did I get those

That's it
These good little shocks must be working I’m so happy now

Well thanks to the awesome and amazing Brian Nelson, my persistence paid off. I started talking to Brian online for about 10 years...I ran into him a few times at shows and always asked what it would take to get backstage...he would tell me lots of money LOL...but he always told me that he would check none the less...Alice would be insanely busy backstage and Brian would still come out and tell me that he is busy (speaks volumes for Brian's character).

Fast foward to 2008 for the ACAS tour, I told him I was going to be at one of the shows in Indiana...he said he would do his best to finally give me one. He said to check the will call when I got up there. When I went up, I asked and sure enough, at long last, was a backstage pass to meet Alice...I thought I would die....after the concert, me and about 19 others gathered and met Alice/Brian. That is when I gave Alice 2 giant bags of Skittles for him...he told me that the band wouldn't leave until they skittles was completely gone. He rummaged through my bag and grabbed random stuff and starting signing it...he was so cool to say the least.

The next night, there was another concert nearby so I went to the casino were Alice was playing and with a buddy of mine who was participating in a Texas Hold'em Tournament, I was wondering around the lobby and then all of a sudden, I ran right into Alice, Sheryl, and Sonora Rose. I yelled out Alice, and he yelled back "Skittles" LOL...since it had been less than 24 hours, I imagined he would still remember me...he asked me to walk with him and his family....that was amazing..I talked to Sheryl for awhile and she was so sweet.

The last time in 2009 was a trip from Louisville, Ky to New Jersey for a horror convention where the original band and Alice were going to be there...I met all of them and talked to him for about 5 mins (filmed and put on youtube).
Sheryl was there again and remembered me.

I hope to do it again next year for the Nightmare 2 tour as I will buy a backstage pass.

Despite being a fan as long as I can remember it wasn't until I done the platinum thing a couple of years ago that I actually met Alice... and Brian.

:(

I came across like a gibbering idiot but managed to get my copies of Me, Alice and Billion Dollar Baby (hardback) signed (along with my planned parenting poster).

He mentioned that he never really bothered with any of his memorabilia but liked that particular poster so much he has one up at home.

He also said he wrote a song about me and proceeded to sing a couple of lines of Steven.

Nice :)

Didnt know that situation. I remember being on the Sick Things mailing list run by Hunter and Bryan Ericson (Katman was his nick) is the owner of the site you are talking about, he was very "popular" in that time.
His site seems to be abandoned.
Is he here or he isnt around anymore? Not that he is my friend, but hey, GNDM you made me remember those years.
And also wanted to ask, if you dont mind: the domain was requested and this guy said no to you? (I understand from your words that you're part of Buxton's Family, right?)

Thanks.

Great stories guys, I really enjoy reading all of them.
I met Alice for the first time in 2000 when he came to Argentina with the British Rock Simphony tour.
Some guy who worked in the biggest rock station in Buenos Aires told me the hotel Alice was at. I went there with my younger sister aroun 9pm and stayed in the bar since that time. I had some talking with Jon Anderson and Toby Mamis even sat with us for a while and told us some stories about Brutal Planet and the release of Dragontown, if I remember correctly.
Alice went shopping through that time and he suddenly appears walking inside and flew into the elevator and I remember I was in shock to see DA MAN... ha ha... I was almost crying. I remember when the elevator doors were closing he stared us and opened wide his eyes... man I was impressed of their size... ha ha. Almost a maniac face...
Just an hour or so before the show the van and some crew showed up and we all started to wait: the man walked in all combed, with some mascara on his eyes and with a bag where his wip showed up....
He started to take the pictures and I was paralyzed starin at him... I approached and said I Admire you to him.... my english vanished! I even didnt want to touch him while the picture was being taken because I didnt wanted to cause any damage to him!! ha ha In those situation one gets so stoopid!
He signed my stuff, and right after that we took a cab folowing the van and we yelled to him part of the way...
The second time was in 2007 and I was ALONE int he hotel waiting for the chance to see him, I waited like 8 hours, already talked to Pat Nowak and Damon Johnson... I dont remember TOby though, but I think we met again that time.
When the showtime approached ALL OF THE SUDDEN the lobby was full with people appearing from nowhere and Ren was yelling us that he gotta leave and there was no time to do anything. He just signed ONE item but didnt get the picture (the first one my bad luck made that Alice is with his eyes closed!!)... I kinda got mad, cuz NO ONE waited so long as I did that day, I remember that I still was angry the next day as I didnt return to the hotel to try again (my bad, I know!)
ANd the third time was this year through a VIP pass I purchased.... it was amazing.
I hope to meet him again in the near future. Living here in Argentina every trip to the northern hemisphere is very expensive and difficult to me. But I will, with or without the consent of my girl (soon wife) who constantly says she doesnt understand me!! ha ha
One of the best things to be an ALice's fan over here is that just a few people knows him, that makes me a privileged one, but on the other side the kind of "mind" people have regarding music doesnt fit with the heavy metal, hard rock type... over here the latin wave floods it all... (I live in the second city of the country, Buenos AIres is more open mind) and I wish I could have ONE soul to share my obsession... being a lawyer doesnt help either, my musical tastes are not coherent with my look...
Well, doesnt matter, more for me! ha ha

These are great stories! I met Alice last year (meet & greet) and was quite nervous, but I think he could tell and was very nice about it, so that helped calm me down. I was also hugely embarrassed when my camera decided to play up, but that worked out alright in the end and everyone was cool about it, including Alice. He made a joke out of it, which helped a lot. So I'll never forget that. :smack:

GNDM, I know we bump heads here and there, but I truly believe we are on the same page, in regards to the band...anyway, I just want to say that is shitty of Katman, not giving the Buxton family the domain name.

Back in the late 70's myself and a friend started the Glen Buxton Fan Club, we had a bunch of members, it was a lot of fun...
