I'm not sure that's accurate. He once sent me a very detailed description of his work with Alice Cooper and I don't think writing was ever mentioned.
I've read MM himself state that he wrote the guitar part in the chorus of Hard Hearted Alice (but not the melody or the lyrics).

Shoesalesman wrote:I believe Dick Wagner had a co-writing hand in I Love The Dead, but he sold his portion of the rights and therefore doesn't have credit on the song.
Only Bob Ezrin and Alice himself are credited as writers of ILTD; Michael Bruce states in his book that he wrote the chorus of the song "to lighten it up a little as the song was so dark". Bob and Alice are also credited as writers of My Stars (on SO); I believe Dick Wagner played on that song too so maybe it was the same situation writing-wise as ILTD?

But that's not what you wrote. You wrote that he "helped write some songs". Writing your own guitar part doesn't necessarily mean he contributed in the way you describe. It can do, but not necessarily.

>(but not the melody or the lyrics).

Exactly and those are much more important than writing a "guitar part" (although it does depend on which song you're talking about).

Something sexy, something bluesy, something that a bag of fun. I know how about under my wheels! For me that's where it all started. :blues:

Well I really hope Alice includes "Keepin' Halloween Alive" on the new album. With that being said, I think it'd be cool to hear a Halloween concept album. I think it's a theme that Alice could create perfectly. "Keepin' Halloween Alive" has already proved to be one of Alice's best songs in recent times. I'd like to see what else he could come up with for this theme! I think it'd be a great success.
It'd also be nice to hear more radio coverage for this album. More singles, and maybe a few videos. Alice has been neglected in these areas for too long. It'd help rebuild his fan-base, and create a new generation of SickThings!!

I just don't understand whatever happened to the grand scale that the ACAS album seemed headed for.just one or two songs on the last 2 tours and that was it.a few familiar things like the spiders weapon and that jacket he wore and that's all theatrical wise as well.those four trailers and long video really make it seem like we are left with a missed opportunity. ::((:

That may be true but that particular medium is not as important as it used to be. Take a look at some of previous discussions on this.

It's been discussed here many times before, though. Even if you don't like the way things have turned out, it's not that hard to comprehend why they have turned out the way they have.

it certainly wasn't a complaint, hope it didn't come off that way.just such a build up,and you know the disc sales were his most respectable in quite a while as well.I guess I either didn't get in on those threads or don't remember, but hey,on to the future!

Ted, the critical thing here is whether the guitar part created the underlying harmony ie the chord progression, or was just an embelishment.

Harmony (more than one note) is just as important as melody and lyrics in a song and is relative as a chord progression creates it's own melody.

A single line vocal melody can sound very different if the underlying harmonic structure or chord progression creates musical tension against the vocal melody and vice versa.

A great example of a guitar part creating melodic tension or dissonance against the chord progression is the solo on 'Ballad of Dwight Fry' which demonstrates a guitar part being a major part of the song.

As Andy says it does depend on what song we are talking about, the guitar riff on 'School's Out' for example is almost as important as the lyric, vocal melody and chord progression, probably apart from the chorus the thing that grabs the listener the most, afterall it is the greatest guitar riff ever written!

I'd have to listen to the original recording again, but I'm not sure I agree. You could remove the element you're referring to, but I don't think it would change the composition in any drastic way.

I have been buying Alice albums since i first saw him on the Old Grey Whistle Test in 1971. In my opinion he has made some of the greatest albums of all time at various periods of his career.
Sorry if i upset any of the younger Alice fans but i would love to here Alice make an album for us older fans.
An album about regular subjects, life, death, love, loss, betrayal, the state of the world etc etc. No monsters, no halloween jingles no stupid stories about serial killers.
If Dennis Dunaway can make one so can Alice. My ideal album would be to get the original band back together, along with Bob Ezrin, a great guitarist to take the place of the great Glen Buxton, (perhaps Slash or Dick Wagner) and for them to write a new album together and a stadium tour. The original band broke up because Alice wanted the theatrics and the others wanted to be taken serious like Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd and The Rolling Stones. Now is the time to do both, a modern live theatric show and a classic adult rock album. Sorry for waffling on but i really love Alice and don't want him to be remembered for making rubbish albums. You never know it might even get him recognised by the pratts at the Rock n Roll Hall of fame.

The stadium tour seems like it might be the hardest part of this to make happen. It's getting harder and harder for anyone to sell out stadiums anymore.....at least, anyone with staying power that isn't a one-hit wonder for just a stadium tour or two.

Tho, as I think about this, I realize I should probably specify it's harder for new acts to do this for more than a tour, and usually not their first tour. There are certainly established acts that have been around and sell out arenas consistently--like U2 or Bon Jovi, say. I think the ACG re-formed would not be enough of a draw just by name to fill a stadium. I think too many people buying concert tickets these days don't realize there was an ACG. And while I'll go see Alice in whatever format he's in--solo with his current kick-ass band, or with a reunion, I'm not sure the reunion would draw the kind of numbers you're looking at.

Don't worry. I don't think that's going to happen.

A lot of people here care!! I'd be very happy if was the band, just be nice to see them together and maybe perform ,
If it's Alice solo then I don't care.

He made a very similar album to the one you are requesting just four years ago, it was called Dirty Diamonds. :8):

What are my hopes/wishes for a new album?

1) Use the current touring line up in the studio. Great band.

2) Use a decent producer. I know there's talk of a "Surprise" producer, but that could be good or bad. Case in point - Danny Saber, was not the first guy I'd think to produce an AC album, either.

3) Really consider what songs are going to make, or not, the album. Two of the I-Tunes only "bonus" songs were better than half of what did make ACAS. And for that matter, why weren't they included on the album, anyway? It's not like there wasn't enough room for them, or that they didn't fit. In fact, I re-incorporated the album with those tunes in it, and it became even better.

4) I agree that Alice works best when sticking to the basics. That's why I liked The Eyes Of and Dirty Diamonds.

Not that I think Alice has ever made a truly terrible album, but that doesn't mean he isn't capable of making an above average one. Two of my other favorite bands, that have been in the game almost as long - Cheap Trick and KISS - just made some of the best albums of their career this past year, too. If they can still do it, I know Alice still has it in him, as well.

Regardless, I'll be looking forward to it.

This prompts the question does any guitar solo form a major part of a song?

I think Glen Buxton came up with something really special with that solo, just as when the old blues players would make the guitar talk communicating what could'nt be put into words, the insanity expressed in the Dwight Fry solo spoke volumes.

I couldn't imagine 'Vengeance Is Mine' without Slash soloing or Led Zep 'Stairway To Heaven' without the Jimmy Page solo.

These and countless other songs wouldn't be the same without the creative input of great lead guitarists.
