Helsinki, Olympic Stadium 8.7.2011

Post by phiit » Mon Jul 11, 2011 10:05 am

Supporting Iron Maiden but won't go there as I'm gonna post a small review of Alice.

Really good gig, bit short only 60min, but Alice delivered as usual and was energetic. Sound was good on the front of stage but they played in full sunlight, kinda took away some visuals but music is what matters.

Here's the setlist:

Vincent Price intro
The Black Widow
Brutal Planet
I'm Eighteen
Under My Wheels
No More Mr. Nice Guy
Hey Stoopid
I'll Bite Your Face Off
Feed My Frankenstein
Poison
Wicked Young Man
Killer
(excerpt)
I Love the Dead
(excerpt)
School's Out

Hey Stoopid was ecxellent, hadn't heard it live before :alice:

With all the talk of Alice 'ripping-off' Eddie, it's a bit of a surprise to see that he is featuring the giant Frankenstein monster

Not that I'm complaining of course!

I wonder what the boys in Iron Maiden made of it

Why?
Because Eddie is such a big part of the Iron Maiden live experience

As a sidebar, have you seen the Iron Maiden video "Raising Hell", released in 1993? At the end of the show, singer Bruce Dickinson is 'killed' by being locked inside an Iron Maiden, and magician Simon Drake is impaled on a metal spike - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77MKMlEGtLE - both of which have been used by Uncle Alice (although the impaling was used during 'The Nightmare Returns' in 1986)

Why should that stop Alice "featuring the giant Frankenstein monster"?

I can see what he's saying. Maiden fans more familiar with Maiden's shows could assume that Alice was ripping off Eddie, as Eddie has been a part of the Maiden show from the beginning. They aren`t to know Alice did that sort of stuff first. Many/most wouldn`t have been born then and have probably never seen an Alice Cooper show.

That's still not a good enough reason. It's
not his problem if those members of the audience are going to think that. Far better to do it and then let them complain, only to find out he came up with that idea. I think was discussed in a previous thread.

Agreed, Alice should never compromise his show.

I wonder if there's anyone out there who thinks Daphne and Celeste wrote Schools Out?

I was at the Helsinki concert, and have been following some comments on one Finnish heavy metal web board about the gig. Iron Maiden fans really seem to appreciate Alice, and no one has complained about the Frankenstein monster. General opinion is that Alice had better sounds than Maiden.

Definately Alice had better sounds, Maiden was just messy, and lazy gig overall from them. I left before the end..

I'm a fan of Maiden too, but Alice really did steal the show! Which is a good thing

I also think Alice was much better than Maiden, in every way. Though Alice's set was (too) short, it was very compact and entertaining. Can't really say the same thing about Maiden's set.

Just a general point..over the years I have been pleasantly surprised by the number of Iron Maiden fans lapping up Alices performance...way back to Glasgow 1982 (wild crowd/great percentage of maiden fans)..even at Milton Keynes a few yrs ago loads of Iron maiden and Ac/Dc fans..so reckon a lot of Maiden fans are clued up.. I reckon Maiden and Alice both excellent live musically and theatrically on their day..and can't see either group being too threatened by influences or performances by the other..

I don't see why anyone is upset about set length; Alice was clearly billed as an opener. I've never heard of an opening act doing more than an hour. You really can't expect him to do a full set when he's billed as opening.
