And . . . with this one I think it's strange that nobody has mentioned it yet, but I thought of it after my first listen. In the "Epilogue" Alice (Spider) say "Eiight legs, one body . . ." My question is, Whose body? One interpretation could be that the one that he let live is the one whose body the killer used. Maybe he loves her so much that he sews the legs on her, and she is the trophy: his very own spider!
"I was scared to death, afraid to close my eyes
And find that I was gone . . . "

I'd say you're right SKULLBOY. As in the 3rd album trailer, the woman speaking says "In the end he intended to tell the police it was I who commited all those murders. I coulden't have killed all those women, I can't even lift a finger etc."
