I was never able to play the original Detroit after the first few listens as to me the chorus was cheesy. The new version sounds much better and I have probably already played it more often than the original.

Personally delighted at the recent volume and variety of output in all its forms, it feels like a real Indian summer for the career. Long may it continue.
The lack of a hook and the little rap-like ending at the 3 minute mark that ends this version is much more off-putting and cheesy to me than the chorus of the original.

On a side note given the name of the EP is "Breadcrumbs". I assume Alice is throwing us some breadcrumbs of what is to come. A very nice sounding album production wise that finally lives up to the sound he said TEOAC was meant to be. I think the most in your face sounding album since BP ( I certainly think this EP is anyway) . Possibly (probably) a cover or 2 on it, Iggy Pop would be cool.

This version of Detroit adds nothing. The original with that great solo was one of the best songs on Eyes.

While I like the idea behind this project I don't like what I am hearing. Alice s voice is thin and raspy and the players sound grey an d jaded. Ezrins production again is lacking. That Seeger song sounds way too much like Gloria!

Seegers teeth make Alices set look positively Colgate. He looks like a beaver!

I loved most of TEOAC but not Detroit. Played both tonight just to try again. Still feel the same. Personal choice. It's added something for me.

Don't get the grey and jaded but certainly agree with Gloria.

First listened to this on Spotify on the way home from an out-of-town trip... was driving and not alone so couldn't really focus on it... but "Go Man Go" really stood out for me... assumed it was another cover. Was pleasantly surprised when I saw it was an original tune because it's a good one and it really captured that throwback vibe.

My first thought on Detroit City was "eh, I liked the original", but after a few listens I got it... it's dirtier... grittier... and raunchier. It feels less formulaic than the original.

I really do dig the "sound" on this disc a lot.... I think they accomplished what they set out to do. I wouldn't mind this approach on the next studio album, albeit it with some darker material in the mix.

Alice confirmed that meaning of the EP title this last week.

Sadly their plans can change... just like the prior album was supposed to have a Killer sound, but then became Paranormal instead, very different from Killer.

I loved Paranormal - listened maybe 50 times. Maybe more. Rise isn’t bad, but I haven’t listened to it since the week it came out. I like this EP more than anything on Rise. Production in general is great. Love the guitars. Love the backing vocals - they compliment Alice’s voice nicely.

In terms of the songs themselves, Your Mama Won’t like Me and Chains of Love are my favorites, whether they are original or covers. The trumpets on YMWLM are fantastic.

Alice isn’t getting any younger, so as far as I’m concerned everything after Paranormal is a bonus. If this EP truly is a breadcrumb for the next album then, we are in for a treat and maybe a truly great album.

a really nice review.
been listening myself this afternoon, finding Go Man Go and YMWLM the most notable songs imo.
( in my record store couldn't find the ep, nor anything like the promo cd Hunter mentioned.. They did have a vinyl RISE copy however, with a sticker on it : Rock Album Of the Year...
Would it ?

It's alright. I am getting tired of his cover stuff already. I'm not really a fan of the hollywood vampires eiher.

Listened to it a few times on Spotify. I enjoyed Seger's Gloria rip-off the best. Overall I find the ep 'okay', in the same way the majority of Alice's post-Brutal Planet studio albums have been 'okay'. Personally, I wish he'd move out of his retro-rock comfort zone, and chuck in more musical curveballs.

I wish that curveball would be working with Dennis Dunaway!

I liked it.
Detroit city is very frustrating as i love the new sound and vibe but the chorus change i dont think is as good (maybe this could change over time?). But still, great song. Go Man Go is also pretty good, good swing and a fun vibe, basic but fun (doesn't outstay its welcome unlike a certain Hollywood vampires album/songs). I also like alot of the covers, i have the (advantage?) of not knowing them so they feel fresh to me!
I will say tho that Alice seems in fine voice with a real energy and bite to his voice, Your mama won't like is a particular highlight for his vocals for me.
The production is spot on with just enough dirt under the finger nails to give it bite but enough clarity for my love of clear production :)
Considering the manner in which it has been thrown out and the title i think it is a superb stop gap and already has more air time than the criminally over rated hollywood vampires Rise pile of mediocrity. If his new album stays in this vein i am ok with that, but i dont care, i am just happy the man has seemingly got excited about music again! (new show, new album - its a great time to be a fan)

Interesting to read the comments re Detroit. From my perspective 20/20 just keeps getting stronger to the point that I'd be delighted if he applied the same level of re-invention to an ACAS track. Would surely be an interesting outcome.

To be honest I prefer the original. It was always one of my favourite songs on eye's. The new one is interesting but doesn't 'drive' as much as the first one.

I like everything Alice does, .. almost. HV does nothing for me, Breadcrumbs is better. But so far I am not that convinced. It did take a while for me to really get into Paranormal, too, though.

No word on the other solo record that was rumoured a year or so ago when he was doing two solo records and HV etc.? Original band guys? Live band guys? Whatever?

From interviews and stuff it seems to me 'Go Man Go' is "from the forthcoming 2020 album" but the rest isn`t.
Just a guess though.

I like the new EP a lot. To me, the best song is the Suzi Quatro cover, "Your Mama Won't Like Me." Such a cool song, well played and Alice sounds great. The musicians are on fire all the way through, and Bob Ezrin makes the whole thing work. Great sounding record.

been listening several times now and I really do like it. I don't mind covers by Alice , certainly if I don't know the originals. ( most of Rod Stewarts covers come over stronger to me for the same reason)
Same thing with the first HV : Whole Lot of Love being the exception ( because better known), but the other songs are ok with me.
