Planet Rocks top 40 greatest guitar solos

Post by suziginajackson » Tue Aug 27, 2019 5:57 pm

On August Bank Holiday, Planet Rock did a countdown of the 'top 40 greatest guitar solos', as voted by listeners. Alice was at #29 with 'I Am Made Of You'.

What is interesting is that not only was the song higher than ones by Hendrix, AC/DC and Judas Priest, but also bands like Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath were not included anywhere on the list

The top 40:

40 : Jimi Hendrix – All Along The Watchtower
39 : AC/DC – Whole Lotta Rosie
38 : Y&T – I Believe In You
37 : Metallica – Fade To Black
36 : Wishbone Ash – Everybody Needs A Friend
35 : Guns N' Roses – Estranged
34 : Judas Priest – Beyond The Realms Of Death
33 : Slash - Anastasia
32 : Thin Lizzy – The Rocker
31 : Dire Straits – Telegraph Road
30 : Dire Straits – Sultans Of Swing
29 : Alice Cooper – I Am Made Of You
28 : Cream – Crossroads
27 : Thin Lizzy – Still In Love With You
26 : Marillion – Easter
25 : Gary Moore – Still Got The Blues
24 : Pink Floyd – Time
23 : Joe Bonamassa – India/Mountain Time
22 : Extreme – Get The Funk Out
21 : Rainbow – Stargazer
20 : Jethro Tull – Aqualung
19 : Megadeth – Tornado Of Souls
18 : Rush – La Villa Strangiato
17 : Gary Moore – Parisienne Walkways
16 : Peter Frampton – While My Guitar Gently Weeps
15 : Led Zeppelin – Since I’ve Been Loving You
14 : Deep Purple – Highway Star
13 : Ozzy Osbourne – Mr Crowley
12 : Bon Jovi – Dry County
11 : Deep Purple – Child In Time
10 : Queen – Brighton Rock
09 : Guns N Roses – Sweet Child O Mine
08 : Van Halen – Eruption
07 : Eagles – Hotel California
06 : Led Zeppelin – Stairway To Heaven
05 : Guns N Roses – November Rain
04 : UFO – Rock Bottom
03 : Alterbridge – Blackbird
02 : Lynyrd Skynyrd – Freebird
01 : Pink Floyd – Comfortably Numb

"I Am Made Of You" was pushed by a low key facebook campaign of write in votes. Good job Penny.

I think it was a surprise to everyone it made it but was great that it did.

I think it's likely a few others got in the same way, but hey, that's how listener votes work.

All in all while everyone can argue about such a list endlessly, it's very had to fault three of the top 4. Was delighted 'Rock Bottom' made it, as for a while I was worried it wouldn't be!

Best guitar solos ever:

Dick Wagner-Pass The Gun Around
Dick Wagner-My Stars

everything else ever recorded in the rock genre follows those two.

Pink Floyd at the top of ANY list (other than sales) positively shows that the ballot box was "stuffed"! :teach:
Congrats AC!

'Comfortably Numb' got 16% of the total vote on it's own. No stuffing was needed. It's 'Comfortably Numb'. It was always going to win.

The black strat Gilmour played it on went for a world record (for a guitar) $3.975,000 a few months back, which went to the ClientEarth charity, which donates money to famine relief and homelessness.

Has anyone ever seen a Shetland Sheepdog 'work'? They are able to not only gather the sheep together but keep them moving forward toward home or their goal. I am often reminded of that when watching the antics of fandom. :bam:

Don't get me wrong, I love "The Wall" (& Darkside) & would include both as a "Desert Island" selection.
Along with all of the original ACG Lp's (how many more may I select?)
Contracts to Steve Hunter also!

Seriously, fandom has changed. Today, fans are more creative. Whatever what their arts or skills are, photography, writing, cosplay, drawing,
etc...,some fans have proven to be better or more creative than the stars that they are worshipping.

I think that "most underrated guitar solos" is more interesting.
I recommend Genesis "The Lamia".(Steve Hackett).

I agree Pink Floyd "Comfortably Numb" is No.1, but Guns N Roses? Bad joke.

most underrated Alice solos?
interesting...
King of the silver screen by Dick Wagner is always a fave of mine, average song but Dicks guitar work on the whole thing raises it up to higher places.
Roses on White lace is one of my all time fave solos, it doesnt seem to get much love but with Ken K Mary drumming for his life, kip doing solid bass work to keep it moving and kane ripping it a new hole it is just stunning and raises the stakes so often before dive bombing into a shredding solo. Perfecto.
