Steve Hunter Articles About Alice Sessions

There may be some people on the forum who do not know that Steve Hunter has been writing a monthly column for Guitar Player Magazine for the last year. The guideline for the 500 words per month is to recall his memories of the many sessions he has contributed to over 45 years, but as time goes on that will probably also include his thoughts on playing guitar in general and anything else he feels will be of interest to the GP readers.

The articles have been running in chronological order starting with his first meeting with Bob Ezrin when he auditioned for Mitch Ryder in 1970. He had just returned home from his two year stint in the army as a draftee.
The articles then move on to his sessions for Lou Reed's 'Berlin', 'Billion Dollar Babies' and of course 'Welcome To My Nightmare'.

All being well these articles will continue into 2017 and will cover Peter Gabriel, Tracy Chapman, Jack Bruce and Dr John but they may not not stay in chronological order.

Each month other than one exception, Guitar Player Magazine has been publishing the entire articles online a month after that issue has been on the shelves.
Below are the articles that have gone online thus far, the one missing is about 'Cold Ethyl' and I will ask the Chief Editor of GP if I can publish that on here myself.

There are a couple more to go this year that discuss 'Welcome To My Nightmare' tracks, October is about 'Some Folks' and then there is a final one where Steve explains his feelings about the original AC Group and his role in Alice's solo career. He is happy to have this platform to share his memories and thoughts albeit with a limited word count.

I am not sure if Steve will get a book of his own done, so these recollections in short article form are probably going to be the only written memories from his point of view other than interviews.

So here are the articles that have gone up online, I will add the others regarding WTMN if and when I can.

Thanks and have a great weekend. Karen

Loved reading about the "Some Folks" sessions in the latest issue. Out of the entire AC canon, Steve's solo on SF is my all-time favorite. Sly, sophisticated, witty - an inspired and masterful moment. One of those solos so great you listen to the beginning of the song in delighted anticipation of it, and a highlight of the WTMN album.

Another of Steve's articles about the recording of 'Welcome To My Nightmare' tracks has gone up online for those who do not buy the Guitar Player Magazine. This one is about the 'Some Folks' sessions.

Next month will be about 'Devils Food' (already published in the magazine) which is the last article on the actual track sessions.

Steve has written one more article regarding Alice, that one covers his own thoughts about the transition from the original band to the solo AC. I will post them on here once they have been published by the magazine online. K

It's well worth checking out Steve's other stuff on there too. Berlin was a very cool Reed.

Hi there Sickthings! As promised, Steve Hunter's article on 'Devil's Food' has now been published online so here it is. As I said before, there is one more regarding those earliest days, which is about the transition to working with solo Alice. That will be in January then he will be moving on to some other topics at least for a while.

I am sure Alice will crop up again at some stage, there were six albums with Steve overall. The next issue after January goes into guitar tone and suchlike which I imagine may not interest you guys, then he will be moving on to other artists like Peter Gabriel etc for a while. All being well his monthly articles will continue throughout next year as I know lots of people are enjoying the inside story to some of these sessions. Take care. K

Thanks Deaconess. I love reading these. I'd enjoy Steve's guitar tones talk, too. The guitars on "It's Hot Tonight" & "Road Rats" are so thick and heavy. Can't wait for those. Thanks again for posting these!
