HBO series Vinyl

Post by Toronto Bob » Tue Feb 23, 2016 7:43 am

Don't know if anyone is watching the series but next week's episode is going to have heavy Cooper content. I've watched the first 2 episodes and I like it. While set in 1973 and dealing with the record industry - it is not a documentary. Don't expect pinpoint historical accuracy, it's just an entertaining show with the cool back drop of 1973 rock and roll.

Thanks - that's good to know. I actually provided some material for it.

I like the series too...I wonder if they'll use actual Cooper footage or just the music with actors playing the Cooper band like the NY Dolls. For the Dolls Johansen rerecorded Personality Crisis & Stranded in the Jungle but used actors dressed up like the band. I really look forward to next week's episode. I bought the soundtrack which includes both of those rerecorded David Johansen tracks. They released the soundtrack CD but it only covers the first 2 hour episode

Cool, while it is a dramatization, clearly they use info from people who know what the deal is. In the first episode, the back stage stuff at the Zeppelin show at MSG was a hoot.

Yeah a cockney Robert Plant and a Peter Grant that had been left in the tumble dryer too long!

It's ok, but I wouldn't call it great. It reminds me a little bit of the Top Of The Pops lps that came out in the early 70's in the UK.

Except it's Dennis playing bass/screams with Al and Jo Bouchard.

Was it that expensive to use the original?

If they use the original, they have to pay a performance royalty.

I don't believe so, but the stuff played "live" within the show are not original recordings. There's a scene where the ACG is rehearsing and they're playing ILTD and it's not from the record, not sure about Unfinished Sweet on the golf course, I just saw mere seconds of the scene.

But rerecording a track needs musicains/studiotime etc etc, that's expensive.
Is a performance royalty that expensive??? :/ :/

From Mr.Bluelegs:

Not exactly. It depends who "they" are. The broadcaster pays royalties (except in this case, I understand the broadcaster is subject paying a fee not royalties) but the producers of the show would have had to pay a fee (not royalties) for the use of the original recordings and as previously explained, that can be hugely expensive depending on the circumstances.

It is a complicated process which I honestly know little about. Both BMI & ASCAP have different roles and fees. Even restaurants & bars have to pay a flat fee to play music in their establishments. Streaming is another separate beast. Obviously, like you stated at the end, it must be much more inexpensive and with less legal paperwork to just rerecord the songs.

The band was only on for 1 segment & I don't remember if Alice or anyone in the scene called them their names but it was kind of cool in the ending credits that it listed each band member's name & the actor who played them including Amazing Randi. I notice that now after each episode ITunes releases an ep of songs that appeared in the episodes. There are cover songs (Aimee Mann from til Tuesday covered Carpenters "Yesterday Once More", Andrew WK w/ "I Love the Dead", Neko Case covered "Danny's Song")
