Goes to Hell tour

Post by Keith1980 » Sun Aug 16, 2015 2:43 pm

My understanding is the tour was canceled at the last moment do to Alices health. My question is do any pictures of this stage show exsist? Was their a tour program book produced for this tour?

I doubt that there was a completed tour program. This tour production seems like it would have been fantastic with the multi-levels and song possibilities.

I believe that this tour concept is "Disco is hell".
It is a pity that the tour was canceled.

It would be a delight to see “Guilty” "Didn't We Meet" "You Gotta Dance" on stage.

You can see "GIVE THE KID A BREAK" "GO TO HELL / WISH YOU WERE HERE"
"I Never Cry" 1976 performance on Youtube.

I guess what i really want to know is how far along was the production of it before it was cancled? I would assume if the stage was built and ready to go or if their was rehearsals that pictures maybe a tour program might exsist. At the vary least photos of the stage.

Well I wasn't alive in the 70's either but wasn't the Nightmare show with I Never Cry added in Australia in 77, about a year after the Goes to Hell tour was planned? Seems like a fairly reasonable time to rest before going on tour again.

What I'm curious about regarding the tour is: was the stage and props and so on built by the time it was canceled? Was it scrapped altogether or was it used for something elese?

They did the WTMN show in 1977 in Australia before starting the L&W tour.

Too bad the tour didn't happen, it really would have helped sales of the GTH album as well as providing an amazing show that could have rivaled or even surpassed the WTMN tour. Most of the album would have worked well on stage, too. A very underrated LP.

The 77 tour was sub par and I have no doubt that a 76 tour would have been a poor one if based on ACGTH. A huge drop off after WTMN.

Was their ever a reason given for the tour to be cancelled, was it alcahol? Or other things? Were their promos for the album or the cancelled tour? Did the album just appear on the shelfs kinda like dada?

Ignore this lol just read the time line. Lol.

It's mentioned in the link I provided.

"A 30 date tour was planned but canceled two days before rehearsals are set to start, Alice collapsed and was rushed to UCLA Hospital in L.A. and was diagnosed as suffering from Anemia. Doctors tell him to take a least a months break. He`s sent to Barbados for two weeks golf and recuperation. When he returned to LA, it was back to the parties and golf."

A bit of trivia- from my memory it was reported that Jethro Tull took up at least some of the tour dates/venues when AC cancelled- I remember thinking this seemed odd because Alice to me was a huge act(probably overblown in my own mind)- of course I now realise Jethro Tull were a big live draw in the USA in mid 70s

I think the cancellation of this tour plus the emergence of Kiss was two parts of Alice's big popularity fall- the other part being 1974 (combined split up of band and taking most of 1974 off)- I know Welcome was a success but maybe after reflecting on the softening of the sound/image plus the other two factors mentioned a lot of fans jumped ship.

I think if the Hell tour had gone ahead, the fans would have got the joke as such re disco being Hell and enjoyed the show whilst waiting for the next album/tour.

I don't think there was anything like that.

Almost certainly not.
