Rank All of Alice's Studio Albums Based on Your Preference

Post by cooperrocks » Wed Jun 25, 2014 5:24 pm

I know this might take a moment, but one of the great things about Alice is the diversity of his music. Rank all the Alice albums in order of your personal preference (Favorite Alice album-1, etc). Let's stick just to the studio albums for this one (no live albums, boxsets, or best of greatest hits). Here are the studio albums in chronological order. I will give my rankings later.

Pretties For You
Easy Action
Love it To Death
Killer
School's Out
Billion Dollar Babies
Muscle of Love
Welcome to My Nightmare
Goes to Hell
Lace and Whiskey
From the Inside

Dada
Constrictor
Raise Your Fist and Yell
Trash
Hey Stoopid

They're all great in their own way. Hard to pick a definitive top to bottom list. Always discovering something interesting with each play. What I think is the top today could slip to a lower slot tomorrow. All depends on my mood & state of mind!

I agree with you completely. I was thinking the same thing when I posted my list. My list is based on how I feel today and could change tomorrow. The only thing that never changes is my number one selection "Dada". To me--there is no other album that comes close to touching it. It is one of the most unique albums ever recorded. It's beyond category and get's better with age and each listen. I've been listening to it since the week it was released and I still hear new things in it. It is a true work of art. It's Alice, Dick Wagner and Ezrin's masterpiece.

Also, my selection for worst Alice album never changes. Concolz said it best--"Trash" is a crime against music.

Me too. Did reviews of all the AC albums and pretty much like them all, even if TRASH, TACS, RYFAY, ACGTH and DT are less than thrilling. Says something that of all the albums he's made, only a bare handful don't really do it for me.
Let's hope we can discuss the new album soon!

There seems to be almost universal praise - on many threads - for the band's Ezrin quartet and WTMN. Then there's a hefty majority who rate FTI, Dada, TLT and Brutal Planet - after that's it's a free for all! My 'flawed genius' ACAS is someone else's 'piece of crap' and so on.

Regarding the hair metal trio, I've seen a couple of posts, on other threads, really praising RYFAY, but can't remember seeing any 'excellents' for the other two. So, are there any ST's who rate 'Constrictor' or 'Trash' as 5-star albums?

And, just as an aside, what do you do about the AC albums you rate as rubbish - shove them to the back of a cupboard; Frisbee duties; keep playing them in the hope you'll eventually like them; local charity shop?! If you get rid of them, does that make you any less of a fan?

There is only one AC album that I consider absolute crap and that is "Trash". I literally have not listened to it in over 20+ years. It was great to see Alice get back on top at the time but even upon it's release I never cared much for it. As time has passed I have grown to loathe the album. With that being said, I would never take it out of my collection as it is a part of the AC body of work.

As far as PFY & EA are concerned--I never had the patience to try and "get into" those albums. I just never cared enough to care about them. But I own several versions on vinyl and cd. Those too will never leave my collection.

I don't think anybody who gets rid of albums they hate are any less of a fan. Some are completists and others are not. I think it's personal preference.

As far as Constrictor is concerned I think it could have been a great album. The main fault is the lack of live drumming. The drum machine DESTROYED the album. the songs for the most part are excellent. I think if they went with a harder edge and production it would have been a classic AC album. I think the album suffered from the fact that they were on a tight budget and were running out of time and money. To me it sounds like a few of the inferior songs may have been filler just to get the album out on time. Also, the cover art/photo is just terrible but I think that was also a victim of MCA's tight budget. BUT on the bright side--the cover did give birth to the "splatter" Alice logo--the best one other than the one on WTMN. RYFAY to me does not rise to the level of hair metal awfulness. I don't find it to be hair metal at all. It's a straight foward hard rock/metal album, not the pop light metal that was to come with Trash. I think RYFAY is a great AC album.

Then came "Trash" and finally the well deserved rise to the top, but a stake in the heart to the long-time fan. "Poison" itself is not a bad song--actually it's the only bright spot on the album. The rest is just a wretched corporate crap fest. From Alice Bon Jovi on the cover to the corporate font of the Alice Cooper logo it was and still is pure rubbish --it was appropriately titled. With all that being said--I understand and respect why it was made and marketed and was thrilled that it was a smash hit. It was great to see Alice back on top after all he had been through and all of the hard work he did to get back to the top.

I like your list. Especially having Special Forces up as third. It's one of the greater albums IMO.

Thanks for everyone's responses so far. As others have said, my list is subject to change a little as well. The reason I was hoping for good response is really to see what albums seem to consistently appear near the Top (or the bottom) of most fans list. It made me think about which albums are consistently ranking high among Alice fans, but we rarely or never hear any songs played off of those albums live (I know setlist are always a big discussion around here). It does seem that something off of Raise Your Fist and Yell and/or Dada would please a lot of fans.

Well, so far I'm the only person in this thread who thinks "DD" is his second best "solo" album after "WTMN". :alice:
