The really great thing about the DVD-A is the 5-channel mix.

I have never heard them how do they sound better or worse? Was the drop out fixed on Killer? The WB originals that I heard just sounded lifeless.

Depends on your tastes... too much high end for me and a bit thin sounding.pitkin88 wrote:I have never heard them how do they sound better or worse? Was the drop out fixed on Killer? The WB originals that I heard just sounded lifeless.
Can't remember about the dropout, but I'd be surprised if it were there. It's not on the box set either so it likely was on the LP master or some safety copy used for the original WB version.

How would any of you feel about a remix of the LP done by Ezrin? I never liked the remixing of a classic until I heard the remixed versions of The Who's Who are You, Lennon's Mind Games & Walls and Bridges, and the AMAZING 1999 version of the Yellow Submarine soundtrack.

Ezrin's remix of KISS's Destroyer sounds great!
And if any of you are Rush fans, you must get the newly-released remix version of Vapor Trails. It's so much better than the original release, which had so much compression and distortion that it was actually painful to listen to.

I wasn't excited about Ezrin's Destroyer Resurrected until I heard it. I think it sounds better than the KISS Remasters version of Destroyer.

Re: AF Masters BILLION DOLLAR BABIES
I always thought "Destroyer" was lackluster so I was looking forward to the remix. You can have much more dramatic results with a remix as opposed to a remaster so that's not a surprise that it sounds better if done well. Overall, Ezrin stayed fairly faithful to the original mix while improving the sound. However, I have to say the changing of the word "down" to "doin" is awful.SickThings wrote:I wasn't excited about Ezrin's Destroyer Resurrected until I heard it. As far as the Alice catalog, I think "Lace and Whiskey" and "Goes To Hell" could probably be improved by a remix, but I don't think they're big enough sellers to warrant a project.

I think this Ezrin/ Hoffman exchange is about to get very interesting. It starts on pg.3 of the comments.
Re: AF Masters BILLION DOLLAR BABIES
I did say Hoffman was a bit of a prick. He often thinks he is as important as the producer and the band. It looks like this is not the master tape he is working from.
Re: AF Masters BILLION DOLLAR BABIES
He is having a bit of a hissy fit over there and I just called him childish. Pretty sure I will be banned within the hour.

I don't know, I'm more inclined to think Hoffman was embellishing the condition of the tapes and the work he needed to do.pitkin88 wrote:It looks like this is not the master tape he is working from.

As a person he is quite pathetic. He never addressed any of Ezrin's comments and threatens to stop his threads when someone asks a few questions. As a fiend of mine said: Bob Ezrin has produced many classic albums. Steve Hoffman eq's them 40 years later. 'nuff said.

Well, as has been mentioned before, Killer is a bit muddy, i'd love to hear a remix of that. But otherwise i would agree.RemarkablyInsincere wrote:I'm only in favor of remixes when the original is somewhat deficient sonically. I don't feel that's actually the case with any of Alice's classic material.
The mastering process, though, which is what is being discussed here, is another thing. So many albums that sounded great on vinyl came across flat on digital conversion. And the technology (or maybe just the technique) has come a long way. I've definitely heard recent remasters that floored the earlier cd releases.
But overall i admit i'm still confused about what, exactly, "mastering" is? Is it just what somebody does to the finished mixes to make them match up on one album together (compressing, volume boosts, etc?) Is there a good summary or primer somebody could point to?

It is the process of transferring the audio from one format to another format.
>Is there a good summary or primer somebody could point to?
The internet has to be full of that information and should be easy to find.
