What's your source for these numbers?
"Golly gee it's wrong to be so guilty..."
Re: Alice Cooper album sales, USA
has anyone (Andy ?) any idea about the album sales in Europe ?
(remarkable to see the number of albums for W2MNM2 ..certainly if you compare them to the big shot albums way back..)

I am curious about the source too. Normally I would dismiss that type of information (no disrespect intended to the original poster) unless it came from an insider, but what is interesting is most of the numbers look quite conceivable.

Re: Alice Cooper album sales, USA
A lot of the numbers are rounded up and down quite significantly, it's obvious that albums don't sell exactly 500,000 copies or 300,000 copies. But why round them off at all, which begs the question where the numbers come from.
I'd be pleasantly surprised if it were true that albums like Zipper and Dada sold 135,000 copies with no promotion, especially Dada. I thought they slipped under the radar more than that.

You may be forgetting the fact that they have had thirty years and thirty - one years respectively, to reach those numbers, though.

Re: Alice Cooper album sales, USA
how much more could they have sold after it's initial release though? he plays nothing from either, there were no videos or tours from either, and they were not easy to find for a long time, until things like e bay and amazon came into existence, and even then the folks that might have wanted it already had it.This whole thread is one big hypothetical/subjective/rounded up and down mess, with good intentions of course.

>how much more could they have sold after it's initial release though?
You are missing the point. A lot of albums sell in very small amounts of a long period of time and that is clearly what has happened here. I assume you don't think those albums sold in those figures at the time that they were released.
> were not easy to find for a long time, until things like e bay and amazon came into existence,
None of that means that those figures are unreasonable and besides those outles would have not counted as official figures representing sales.
>and even then the folks that might have wanted it already had it.
What about the people that later bought the albums on compact disc though? It all adds up if you think about it. Divide the numbers by the number of years and it might make more sense.
>This whole thread is one big hypothetical/subjective/rounded up and down mess, with good intentions of course.
I don't necessarily believe the figures are accurate until we're told how they were arrived at. I think the figure for "Trash" is somewhat on the low side, for example, but the figures for the two albums under discussion don't seem unreasonable.

Re: Alice Cooper album sales, USA
Hiya.
I'm the OP. The figures are accurately sourced from Soundscan via a friend who does legal stuff in the 'industry.' This is not covert stuff, just statistics available to people who have the luxury of free subscriptions to this kind of stuff.
I'm surprised that Andrew Michael didn't have access to this stuff already.
Just trying to stir up discussion on a forum guys. Don't shoot the messenger.

I suspected as much all though the reference to the "RIAA" was slightly misleading in that they certify albums with a particular sales figure rather than verify it. They do however deal with the number of units shipped (not sold), however.
> This is not covert stuff,
I don't think anyone suggested it was. I still maintain the figures for "Trash" are a little low but that's a different issue.
>I'm surprised that Andrew Michael didn't have access to this stuff already.
How do you know I don't and how do you know I have the time to go through it all in detail?
>Don't shoot the messenger.
Nobody, as far as I can see, is doing that.

Re: Alice Cooper album sales, USA
Paulimo, thanks for sharing. Do you have any idea why they round off sales so liberally? For example actual sales would be something like 486,705 or 546,232 instead of 500,000. Are they saying its an inexact science and they aren't sure of the actual numbers so these are ballpark estimates?

Exactly. If each unit is monitored, then the figures should be more precise.

Re: Alice Cooper album sales, USA
Possibly a silly question but what counts as a sale? Is it where an album exchanges hands between the warehouse and the store or the store and the customer?

Re: Alice Cooper album sales, USA
Thank you Andy.
Re: Alice Cooper album sales, USA
Couple of observations...
Old School Box Set sales, if accurate, is VERY impressive all things considered.
Also, looks like "Greatest Hits" is due for double certification and "Hey Stoopid" is up for Gold. Up to the record companies to have them certified of course.

Couldn't afford this at the time of release, hope it could happen again, although I would doubt it would be - wasn't it a limited edition?

There is 'stripped - down' version available.

Yes, although it seems more were manufactured to meet the demand.
