Paul Morley interviews Alice for NME, 1982

Post by Kristian » Wed Jan 30, 2013 7:17 pm

To those who've not seen it:

I typed this up from a book that I got recently, called "Ask: The Chatter of Pop", by Morley. He might be a tool but I like anything that sheds light on the "Dark Ages" of AC.

I remember reading that article when it was first published.
Thought it was weird then, and the passage of time hasn't improved it any.
I've always been of the opinion that Morley embellishes some of his interviews.

Thanks for this- the few times I have seen AC around this time on tv he seemed very speeded up and a bit agitated- but given the length of his career and his experiences as a rock star he was always going to go through difficult stages- he talks about his dislike for swearing and then apparently swears-whether this is deliberate in an attempt to confuse/shock or ven accurate reporting we'll never know...feel Alice was a bit confused/over focused at this time-shows how well he has done since.

Moonshadow, you're welcome. I feel privileged to be able to give something to AC fandom, even if it's an interview from when he was not really well. Thankfully, he got better!

And yes, it seems plausible that Morley added a bit of "ambiance" at some point.

Thanks for posting Kristian.

Typical NME at the time and why I stopped reading it in the early eighties. "Pretentious..Moi?" -The NME, I mean not Alice!

I also bought this when it came out. First time I've read it in a long time, still have the original some where I'm sure. Is this the entire copy from the book because I believe there was a little bit more to the interview? I certainly remember a part when Morley claimed Alice left the room and Morley inspected the 'whoresniping' target to confirm that it wasn't possible to fire the Q-tips through the page and that it was purely for show.

This is what's in the book, plus my typos. It might have been edited from what appeared in the magazine.

What a tool, indeed! Also, as we know, Alice was heavily drinking again by this point. This interviewer makes Lester Bangs seem focused and refined!
Thanks, Kristian for posting this, for historical purposes, if nothing else.
