Steven - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6tzQPOANqoA - the riff and keyboards are chilling

It pre-dates the films of Dario Argento and John Carpenter by a few years!
Dario Argento started directing in 1970.

Edit: But yes, Steven is a horror masterpiece.

Dario Argento didn't ever write the music for his movies, it was mostly Goblin, with some Morricone in there too.

Spooky? Mary Ann. It's such a fabulously alluring song, but has that knife to stick in your gut in the final line. Yet it bops along quite nonchalantly, and Alice delivers it as though he'd sung nothing controversial at all. Don't forget, this was in 1973. Such a good bait and switch.

Cold Ethyl certainly has its moments. But I suppose Steven would win out if I'm just considering his "horror" songs.

That's not strictly true, take Suspiria for example the music was written by Goblin in conjunction with Argento.

Keith Emerson shouldn't be forgotten either who scored one of Argento's best soundtracks Inferno.

There was a great TV doc about Argento where Emerson talked about how he came up with the music to Inferno (about 20 mins in) but the whole doc is worth watching and features Alice Cooper.

Yeah that's a good one. I always had the impression that Millie and Billie were siblings as well as lovers. That gave it an extra element of weirdness.

Great song though. Very haunting and almost sweet. That's what makes it creepy.

"Millie and Billy" is creepy on the same level as "Mary Ann" and "Only Women Bleed." All are very commercial-sounding tunes with totally warped punchlines.

And it's funny how almost all of the rest that've been cited in this thread are Steven's songs. Add to that list "Wind-Up Toy," with its broken Jack-in-the-Box intro, unnerving sound effects and strange outro. Maybe not THE creepiest, but worth noting, all the same.

The Awakening is even creepier than Steven imo.
