A very rare "Bad Review" of an AC Show

I know it's just an opinion, but any opinions of this review of Alice's show at Bluesfest?

http://blogs.ottawacitizen.com/2012/07/ ... substance/

It seems like he hasn't seen Alice play live in a while. I would think Alice's setlist would get a lot rougher over time with his age, but in a way he's right. Some of the grit Alice had in his music in the past is gone and it's more slick. But for me, I like it a lot better like that. I think it's a lot more refined and shows Alice's maturity as a rock star. Plus, there's still a lot of grit to enjoy in his music in my opinion.

I think it can be compared to someone who is 20...maturing into the age of 35. You start to calm down and refine yourself in your role in business, sports, music...etc.

Maybe he was hoping for more than he got, although 50 minutes is not really long and Alice was trying to finish in that time span...
Alice has gotten more slick over the years but still puts out quality albums on a pretty regular basis and tours regularly, for which we can be thankful (just wish he would shake up the set list a bit).

His shows are much better now than in the 70s, even if highly predictable.

I could loose some of the schtick if it led to more variablity in the setlists. Maybe leave a block of 2-3 songs that are varied each show.

How do you know ? Did you see his 70`s show ?

I`ve never seen none of those and I really wish i could !! Either from the Killer, Schools`Out or the BDB tour. This was when they were a group and Alice WAS Alice. Think how radical these shows were back then. THE ACG was dangerous !! The guillotine sequence from the Killer show looks absolutely fantastic and gothic !!not the going "through the motion" he do in todays show.

Don`t get me wrong i like todays Alice a lot too. The BP show was fantastic. Maybe the best Alice show I have ever seen. NMMNG is good as well.

>The guillotine sequence from the Killer show

You need to change that sentence.

>not the going "through the motion" he do in todays show.

I think I'll let others comment on that.

Generally a bad review doesnt worry me as they are outweighed by hundreds of good ones...its also a bit ironic perhaps criticising the music/production as to slick at a blues festival-one might expect it to be toned down from a full out rock show...and maybe more musically exact imo(think about the montreaux show-a bit sanitized maybe)...now "luney tune"...I agree the gothic thing was more scary in 1972...but as AC says you cannot shock the audience in this way anymore (it was brilliant though)...Alice has put massive effort into producing a show which encapsulates the last 40 years...this is not consistent with going through the motions...

He's entitled to his wrong opinion. :)
