Re: The story of W2MN
Basically, each story tells about how a guy who has been awake for days on CAFFEINE and speed, is afraid to close his eyes because he may die. He closes his eyes...and the NIGHTMARE begins....he dreams he on a RUNAWAY TRAIN that crashes into a world where he thinks he is the LAST MAN ON EARTH, only to discover he is actually part of a larger CONGREGATION....

Erick, go to the NEWS page of this site. Scroll down to the banner which says WATCH THE TONIGHT SHOW. At the 2nd line click on to YOUTUBE CHANNEL. Alice explains all the songs. It really is great and should answer your questions.
Re: The story of W2MN

Alice doesn't explain 'the story' though does he? I think erickana666 is curious about the actual storyline - well, that's MY interpretation of his posts.revinkevin wrote:Erick, go to the NEWS page of this site. Re: The story of W2MN
I'd say that's pretty accurate, here's what I believe it is - given the info in the fanpack and my own conclusions...
1. madeof you : realising what's given him his strength ... reminding him of his strength. Perhaps as a way to see him through what's going to happen?
2. Caffeine : the lengths he's going to in order to avoid falling asleep at night. Realising his weakness.
3. Nightmare : The moment of giving up the fight and dozing off
4. Runaway : 'waking up' in a dream that takes him on a journey deeper into the nightmare. there's no escape now.
5. Last man: Finding out it's not a nightmare at all, giving him the false hope of it actually being a pleasant dream of being able to get away with anything that he wants.
6. Congregation : It's a nightmare afterall. He's greeted and shown around by a whole host of dastardly guides (the congregation) that's been watching him.
7. Bite : An enticing woman, part of 'the congregation' half seduces, half threatens him with death.
8. Disco: She takes him to a dance, only for him to find out it's absolute hell for Alice - disco... and zombies. He conquers this particular hell, however, with good heavy rock (...and John 5 on the wailing guitar 8-) )
9. Ghouls : A party again but on the beach .. more zombies, more wildness and chaos.
10. Something : Him singing a tender song to his female host ... perhaps the nightmare in this case is that they'll part? Her dropping away piece by piece, or him waking up.
11. When Hell : Suddenly, with no explanation... he's transported to real hell of domestic abuse. Half being the character being abused, half being an observer. Again, he / the victim comes out victorious, shooting the offender dead.
12. What baby : Back to his 'lover'. For the cost of this whilwind trip, she wants his soul and there's no way she'll let him leave without it.
13. Gotta get : He's desperate to escape. The congregation emphasises what the devil wants. 'what part of dead don't you get?'. He doesn't know if this is a real deal or part of the nightmare. That's when we leave him.
14. Underture: the 'endtroduction'. wraps it all up.
I shan't really count the bonus material as it's different on various versions.
Typing it out like this, it sounds a pretty awful / ridiculous story. But it performs so well on the disc.
I think this could be the only Alice album that people can write such a story on? perhaps there's more but I can't see it ... and mmost of this isn't from listening to the album alone, but rather reading / listening to the various interviews where Alice fills in some of the gaps the album doesn't explain. Perhaps that's cheating...

Re: The story of W2MN
Ericanna, yup, you get the idea as well as anyone.
Re: The story of W2MN
I'm thinking "When Hell Comes Home" is a look into his childhood, and maybe part of the reason WHY he is in Hell, and not Heaven.
Re: The story of W2MN
I think we may be simplifying things somewhat Most of Alice's lyrics have more than one meaning, and often, the 'real' meaning is not the 'superficial' one. For example, the first cut is also his 'dark' days and finding God again, the second one is also about an addiction to caffeine - regardless of the notion it is to keep him from sleeping.

Re: The story of W2MN
That's true - his songs do tend to have more than one meaning, and it should be a-given here. In this situation however, it's the first AC album that has such a rigid storyline - to not follow it would be a shame. I don't think we're eliminating any other meanings in this thread, just getting the superficial story down (and even that has it's grey moments).
Since you mentioned it, I still have my doubts that Caffeine is some sort of addiction song - perhaps at a big stretch it could be... but it's taken more for avoidance than compulsion so I have my doubts.

Re: The story of W2MN
Perhaps The Underture is the point where it all collides for Steven and he wakes up? Realizing that he's not dead and just had a bad dream.

Re: The story of W2MN
Yes, could well do! Never thought of it like that, and it does give good reason why it ties both nightmares up.
