Steve Hunter
I have always known Steve Hunter was a good guitar player but seeing him on this recent Alice tour has really made me realise just how talented he is. I would like to check out some more of his work outside of Alice but hes played on so many albums over the years i dont really know where to start. Any suggestions?

Re: Steve Hunter
Here is a list of his solo albums:
1977 - Swept Away (Atco)
1989 - The Deacon (IRS)
2008 - Hymns for Guitar (Deacon Records)
2008 - Short Stories
I would start with Swept Away, Bob Ezrin was involved.
Also go on Youtube and look up Rock and Roll Animals. There are several interviews with Steve and Dick Wagner.

"Rock'n roll animal" in combination with "Live" is in my opinion the BEST live concert ever on vinyl/cd.
Shame there is no official video from.
Both albums are LOU REED albums.

Re: Steve Hunter
you should definitely also check out Peter Gabriel's first solo album that Steve (and Dick Wagner) played on some of his best playing is on there.
The live Lou Reed albums especially Rock n Roll Animal (the whole band would go on to become Alice's band) as mentioned are awesome but also check out the studio album Berlin a classic once again featuring Steve & Dick.
Gabriel's debut & Berlin were also produced by Bob Ezrin as if it couldn't get any better!

And don't forget that the lead guitars on Aerosmith's "Train Kept A Rollin'" are Steve Hunter (the studio portion of the song) and Dick Wagner (the fake "live" portion of the song). As an aside, Steve told me that when he recorded his part, it ended with the studio portion. He didn't know about Dick and the "live" portion until the album came out.

Thing that strikes me with Hunters playing is his style, its very original, he doesnt fly around the guitar neck he just utilises the scales where he is playing.
Re: Steve Hunter
Agree with all the recommendations about where to find some great Steve Hunter stuff (Lou Reed /Gabriel etc) ......
One of my personal fave's that was mentioned is his solo album from 1988 -The Deacon on Illegal Records , as part of their "NO SPEAK " collection ,where the got some well known artists to do an instrumental album (Wishbone Ash /Steve Howe/Stewart Copeland released "No Speak Albums)....
The Deacon is a great album , from the fun cover of "Ghost Riders " , to some real late-night, laid back guitar tracks , it is unmistakably Steve Hunter ......Even the sleeve notes by Bob Ezrin are worth buying this album for

Re: Steve Hunter
I forgot to mention the also famous part of Hunter playing the homecoming of The ROSE in the movie The Rose. Hunter wrote that and played it in the movie. Epic!!
The Rose was played by Bette Middler and was about the life of Janis Joplin.

Holy Crap, dude...Lou Reed Live is one of my all time favorites!!! I wish there was a Lou Reed forum like this, Lou is one of my all time favs...mestreech wrote:"Rock'n roll animal" in combination with "Live" is in my opinion the BEST live concert ever on vinyl/cd.

Actually Alice joined Lou on stage at Massey Hall in Toronto in 1974 !!!!
Funny that the Alice/Lou connection is so deep, both used Bob Ezrin and the same muscians.
Bob produced one of the greatest most frightening albums for Lou "Berlin". Bob is quoted as saying "Let's wrap this turkey up before I lose my mind" or something like that.

Re: Steve Hunter
I guess I'm in the minority as I feel they ruined Lou's sound. I much prefer the low fi punk of The Velvets sound to heavy handed approach of Steve and Dick. Their style worked much better for Alice.

Re: Steve Hunter
Sorry just remembered Bob's line in reference to Berlin,
:"Let's wrap this turkey up before I puke"
Anything Lou does is great, The low fi Velvets and the big sound with Steve and Dick...

This is mentioned at

although I think the latter suggestion there is incorrect.

That's fine, but again, you're telling us stuff we already know.
