Sorry if this has been covered but this paragraph from the NME article caught my attention.

Has this been confirmed?

The two will be appearing together in a new Tim Burton film, 'Dark Shadows', based on the 1960s American soap opera of the same name, due for release in May 2012.

Damon confirms it on his latest news post on his site:
But the big treat for fans and band alike was Johnny Depp making a surprise guest appearance on guitar. "We had no idea he was coming until the day before the show", Damon reports. "Alice is filming a part in Depp's next movie, Dark Shadows, and I'm sure there is plenty of music talk going on in the dressing trailer".

With all due respect to Alice I do hope its a small walk on.

I was/am a huge fan of Dark Shadows and loved suspending belief for awhile when watching the show or DVD's.

If we start having current celebrities mucking about in a period piece it will kill the fantasy vibe quite a bit. :nono:

And having Johnny Depp isn't doesn't already kill that vibe???

Good point actually...

Depp is a brilliant actor (excluding those clumsy pirate excursions) so I was hoping to get past his "current" celebrity status but now that you've brought it front and center it will indeed be a tall task to ignore...

Damn you...

You're welcome! ;)

That's always been one of my problems with certain actors. Jack Nicholson was awful in The Shining because he was just being Jack Nicholson. Same thing again in Burton's Batman. It was just Nicholson doing the same schtick as he'd done in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest....

Depp actually does a better job than most of getting into a character, but there's not a single person on the planet who will go see that movie and not think about it being Depp....

That's why I love movies with no-name actors, or the occasional people like Gary Oldman who are virtually unrecognizable in their different roles.

Same here...anonymity lends itself well to fantasy

Anywhoo, I'll be there  like an idiot... :smack:

Woooahh! You've just criticised my favourite actor in my favourite film!

I'm very hurt!

If you've read The Shining, Jack Torrance starts out as Everyman who is corrupted by the Hotel.

From the very first scene of the movie, Nicholson's Torrance looks like he's batshit crazy before he even gets to the hotel. And it's the same crazy schtick he perfected in Cuckoo's Nest.

I agree that there are some really effective Nicholson scenes in The Shining. But compared to the journey of the character in the book, he's awful in the role.

Granted the book and the film of the shining portray the character in very different ways, however i think the shining is one of the greatest films ever made and i love Jacks performance in this. I have always felt the way he plays Jack Torrance is very real and i can toatally relate to him (perhaps this makes me a bit batty)!!

Stephen King was unhappy with this version, which is why he bought back the rights and made a TV version that was closer to the book.

Unfortunately, that version wasn't really any better, IMO.

Good call. Oldman IS skilled.

Mostly these actors are asked to do the same over and over again. So to say that an actor can't act because everything is the same is kind off silly...

But to be fair Depp isn't always playing the same way, and isn't going for the big roles. Mean who didn't love the cameo in Alice's Nightmare on elm street; Freddy's Dead?

I have started viewing the dvd's of Dark Shadows and have just been introduced to Angelique. Love it! But kind off dislike Victoria being so obvious from another time.
But well after seeing a picture of the barnabas from the 1991 series... Burton has to be better doesn't he?
And Alice mostly plays a small part like in Horror In The Attic so don't worry. It will be great!
hope so...

According to IMDB the US opening date for the new film will be the 11th of May 2012. Cannes Film Festival starts the day before, so it is very likely that Dark Shadows will be considered as the opening film of the festival, especially as Tim Burton was the president of the Cannes Jury in 2010. So looks like we might see Alice and Sheryl walking the red carpet on the Croisette next year! :)
