1985 : Alice Cooper and Twisted Sister together

Post by Steven Lee Cooper » Sat Jun 25, 2011 10:42 am

This meeting was the first sign of Alice's comeback.

What did you think of it at the time ?
How was it seen by hard rock fans and Alice fans ?
Did you expect a move of this kind from Alice ?
Did Alice give any interview to support this ?
And did it make you crave for the next album ?

Woops, sorry, that makes for a lot of questions indeed.... :x

Quite pleased to see Alice on the scene again, but saddened a little that he should only appear to get acknowledgement from a very basic and hideous heavy metal band around that era. As though that was all his work really amounted to.

>>How was it seen by hard rock fans and Alice fans ?

I don't know.

>>Did you expect a move of this kind from Alice ?

Well, I thought that if were asked by anyone to guest star - he would, why wouldn't he?

Did Alice give any interview to support this ?

Not specifically that I know of - Andy will know- although, he mentiond it in interviews, told us that the video was banned by MTV and that he felt that was good as he felt like he was on the right track because of that.

>>And did it make you crave for the next album ?

No, because I thought he may sell out to Heavy Metal - which of course he did!!!

Thanks Gunner for your quick and rich answers. I guess the reception Alice got from the Twisted Sister encounter had been good, encouraging him to pursue with that style...certainly that led him to the decision of staying on this path - hence "Constrictor". Though, when I listen to "Be crool to you schuel" (was that the right bizarre spelling ?), I think it has at least a kind of rock'n'roll vibe that Alice wasn't to show at all on his MCA LPs, and that song is Heavy Metal mostly by the typical 80's production. Perhaps that light rock'n'roll vibe is why we have Billy Joel, Clarence Clemmons and Brian Setzer on that song !

I'm actually quite a fan of TS and it was good to see them tour the UK with Alice in 2005. As far as I'm aware, they never play that song live and it came from a low point in both their and Alices' careers.

It's a bit of a duff song and was never right for Alice in my opinion.

I don't think so.

As an aside..I remember one UK music paper welcoming it at the time (mid80s) as the first chance to experience Alcohol Free Alice..probably Sounds or NME..this was a relief to some at the time in that Alice was returning to rock/hes healthier..prior to that one or two Alice offerings had been reviewed in one word "dismal" for Zipper I think..can't even remember a review of DaDa..I can't think of any superstar who lived and sunk lower in terms of media coverage/sales...but like all great champs he came back..this got him working again as Alice

You make some good points Gunner ( especially the heavy metal ) though I don't think Twisted Sister at that time were thought of as as being hideous. They were on the top of their game and huge in the US. It was just great to see a sighting of Alice and we should be greatful to the band for them paying respect.

I want to take back a bit of what I said about Alice doing 'metal', RYFAY was a cracking metal album in my opinion, but Constrictor was poor as far as I am concerned.
I think TS played BCTYS live (without Coop of course), in fact, I'm almost sure of it.
