Question about early 70’s Alice poster w/ daisy & gold foil

Post by GlitterQueen » Sun May 15, 2011 8:57 pm

The same photo that was used on the original VHS cover of “Prime Cuts” was used to make a large poster back in the very early 70’s. This is the shot of Alice shirtless wearing metallic gold foil around his torso & with a daisy perched on his head.

I have noticed recently that there are several stores on Ebay selling a reproduction of this poster for $10-20. Most if not all do note that it is a repro, so they’re not trying to pass it off as an original.

I’m wondering if anyone can tell me what the differences are between these new versions and the original genuine first-print poster.

I purchased a version of this poster around five years ago and have kept it rolled & sealed in a tube. I bought it under the assumption that it was indeed the real deal, and it is definitely different than the new repro’s. But I’m honestly not positive if it is legit or not. I’ve often thought about getting it signed by Alice, but I don’t want to bother if it’s not original.

Any and all help is much appreciated.

The paper is different on the reproduction and also there is a logo on it which the official poster did not have. Also, I think the reproduction is smaller.

Thank you for the reply.

By "logo", do you mean some kind of small wording somewhere on the sheet (such as printing company info etc.)? Or the "Alice Cooper" name, which I have noticed is in a different font and in a different area of the newer poster as opposed to the one I have.

On the copy I have, there is absolutely no printing of any kind to be found except for the Alice name at the top-left-hand corner.

Actually, on the repro's I've looked at on Ebay and elsewhere, I cannot see any other printing, either.

Still confused

Not sure GQ, but it's interesting that you'd want to get the original signed.

IMO, when an ultra rare item is signed it can almost detract from the value since it's no longer "pristine" even though the autograph itself has value.

I would almost prefer to get a reproduction signed and keep the original in it's original state.

Hey, you know me – I’m a rebel! LOL.

I understand what you’re saying. But, assuming that the copy I have is indeed original, then it’s in absolutely pristine condition. And if I were to eventually get it signed, I would ask that it not be personalized (nothing but Alice’s signature). Not because I have any designs on ever selling it – I would NEVER sell anything Alice-related that I have! – but just so that I ensure it *IS* still ultimately of value.

It’s all a moot point for the immediate future anyways, since I was hoping to win a local radio contest for the show I’m going to tomorrow night and because of the station’s screw-ups, I didn’t win. :rotfl: BUT, I’d still like to know which version I have because hopefully there WILL be a next time!

In an effort to officially confirm or deny, and for those who are curious, here are photos of both versions of the poster I'm referring to.

The inexpensive modern repro:

And the version that I own:

Cool to see the comparison. Certainly looks like your version is older but I don't know for sure.

That's what I think as well, but of course I'm not sure either. Hoping the pix may help someone tell me definitively.

I actually forgot to measure my poster when I took it out to photograph it (I'm a dumbass), but I do know that it's quite large, easily 3 feet long. The repro one I posted is listed as being 17" x 24", which is definitely much smaller.

On page 56 of Golf Monster, Chapter 7, there is a close up of the photo and below it mentions 1972.

I found this auction with a slightly different poster, and the seller says Warner Brothers released 3 different posters, on cardboard, in 1977.

I have not found anything else yet.

I found a magazine from 1972 with the photo, so it originated then.

But that still does not help you with your question... :(
PLEASE, save me from this sick man!

Someone has given the repro a work over, in the version you own the figure is cut out and you can see the former background around the head where the hair is frizzy.
In the new version that was photoshopped out.

If it's a legal reprint or not I have no idea.

I didn't even realize this poster existed, but I know there's a large full body picture from the same photoshoot that appeared in a German magazin in 1972 (claimed to be lifesized)

That looks like the original. I don't remember the logo being there, but it does look like the one which Alice would sometimes throw into the audience
and that was on sale in 1973 at the shows.

Do you know by any chance if the image of Alice on the original was kind of grainy? When you look at the poster, the image is a bit dull with a slight greyish cast, certainly not as vivid and clean as a poster made today.

All the more reason to believe it's likely original, I guess.

It wasn't printed on glossy paper, so that might be what you are thinking of.

I believe it is.

Good luck... It took me almost a year to track down all individual parts.
It helps to keep the price low(er) if you search eBay by issues from that year instead of using the search term "Alice Cooper Starschnitt".
