Original version of "Escape"

Post by Petri » Sat Jan 10, 2009 12:55 pm

The Hollywood Stars, a '70s rock band, recorded a song called "Escape" in 1974. It is, in fact, the original version of the track that Alice recorded for his WTMN album.

The song can be heard on the following web site: http://www.rubendefuentes.com/ruben_hollywoodstars.htm
"A lot of people confuse me with Mel Gibson."

Great discovery! I looked at the writing credits, and sure enough... (Cooper, Fowley, Anthony)!

I had always thought that "Escape" was conceived by the same guitarists that played "Sweet Jane." Very similar to my ears.

Cool also to see "King of the Night Time World" in there. I love this kind of information. Well done, Petri!!

That explains this then:
Anthony and Fowley sued Randy Bachman of Bachman Turner Overdrive because his song 'Down The Line' sounded like 'Escape' (Alice was not involved as he wrote the lyrics). They settled out of court and he added their names to the publishing.

I'll have to give Down the Line a listen - I can't recall a similarity.

KISS must have bought King of the Nighttime World outright, because IIRC, Stanley has the writing credit on that one. HA HA Kiss - what a scam they were.

Actually he only has co-writing credit (along with Bob Ezrin, Kim Fowley and Mark Anthony) and in all fairness the KISS version is a bit rewritten (faster tempo and slightly different lyrics for example).

It's mentioned on that page that they worked with Bob Ezrin so that's probably why two of their song ended up on albums produced by him.

Thanks for the clarification - I didn't check my record just on the interweb. That's fine then.

I really like the Hollywood Stars version of King Of The Night...better than Kisses version. :rotfl:

Escape is a very mediocre and rather basic and boring song, but I have to say that I didn't know it was written and recorded before Cooper worked on it.
