Live Shows Per Year?
This is related to bootleg vs. studio CD question. How many live shows (Coop and all others) do you see in a year? I have 2 next week (Journey/Heart/Cheap Trick and Hippiefest with Jack Bruce and Eric Burton). I will probably see 20-25 shows this year.
The reason I ask is there are still Stones/Beatles discussions on other boards and they often break down along the lines of a preference for studio work versus the preference for the excitement of live shows.
So, how much do you get out? Is rock music something that can really be enjoyed on the computer or home sound system, or is it something you have to experience and participate in?
How often do you get away from the computer and actual enjoy life, LOL?

As far as Alice live goes, listening at home does not compare to physically being at a show. I prefer the studio stuff if I'm at home but I love being at a live show, makes me feel alive and I get drunk on the atmosphere (ok maybe it's just the beer :P). If I could afford I'd go see Alice again in America, the two shows this year weren't enough.
As for other artists, I was thinking of going to a couple of other gigs, want to see Megadeth but they've been and gone already so I missed out this year, and I wouldn't mind seeing Metallica but they're only doing festivals and I ain't going to a festival. Would love to see Rob Zombie too but since he's only touring America and I can't afford a trip over there right now...

Deffinetly all for it being experienced. I've seen plenty more local bands play live than major artists, but either way I appreciate seeing both. There's a brilliant pub down by my uni which has a music room at the back where they frequently showcase live bands - from all guns blazing metal to classic rock'n'roll and the occasional man / acoustic guitar combo .... meaning you get a quality mix and can catch a good 3 or 4 bands there in a night.
Plus the place gets into a sweat pit once it gets going, very lively place with a good mix of people. That + the booze = good night out.
As far as major artists are concerned, Alice has been the most frequent - and most enjoyed. However in the past I've seen Muse and Marilyn Manson dedicated gigs (not counting major artist support bands, who are really only a bonus .... I would be there no matter who opens up for them) who have come close to Alice level. Particularly Manson.
Seeing Queen + Paul Rodgers in October, as well as SeaSick Steve. It's them + Alice which I would have seen by the time '08 is up. That combined with the amount of local bands I've seen, I think that's a well rounded diet of live music.

I love live shows. From July 1st last year to today this is who I can recall seeing....
Cheap Trick X2 (once with Blue Oyster Cult opening)
Alice x9 (B.O.C. opened one of those as well)
Poison x2 (once with Dokken and Sebastian Bach)
Tesla
Bon Jovi (Daughtry opened)
Kansas
Tom Petty (Steve Winwood opened)
Whiskey Falls x12 (at one show they were on the same day as Reba McEntire, so we did stay to watch her)
And then last year's Christmas Pudding.
Live shows are great!!
that said...when sticking a CD in, it's much more often a studio version.

In the last twelve months...
Chilliwack at the Century Casino, Charlie Pride at the Jubilee, and Alice x4 this Fall all over the province. Lets not forget Monkee Mickey Dolenz at the end of this month. I see maybe four shows a year, with the exception of this year. Last year it was Billy Joel, Jordan & Prakash John, Heaven & Hell and The Who.
Seeing Alice is on a different level than the rest. I'm on my feet the entire time, but usually I'm in a good seat somewhere in the middle for the other bands.

Petty/Winwood was the best show I have seen so far this year!
Fogerty and ZZ were quite good as well.
I walked out on Santana when he spent more time preaching politics than playing guitar.
The Doobies blew Chicago off the stage, even when they played a 6 song encore together.

Live shows are great... and nothing touches an Alice show! That said, I can't do quite as many as I used to due to responsibilities and such... although I did do quite a few this last year, I expect it will lessen from here on out...
In the last 12 months or so:
Van Halen x2
Genesis
Billy Joel
Ace Frehley x5
Alice Cooper x3
Donnie Iris x3
Heaven and Hell / Megadeth
Trans-Siberian Orchestra
Scheduled shows:
Judas Priest / Heaven and Hell - August
Alice Cooper x 2 - August
Donnie Iris - October
And I'd be going to see Iced Earth in Cleveland if it weren't on my anniversary

America
Collective Soul
Finger Eleven x2
Ringo Starr
Johnny Winter
Steely Dan
Crosby Stills Nash
Boston
Hippiefest
Bob Dylan
Backman and Cumming
Alice Cooper
The Who
Many others were festivals that included
Voyager Days with Stampeders, Headpins, The Sweet
Summerfest with Kim Mitchell, Honeymoon Sweet, Stampeders, Finger Eleven
Misc events with Trooper, Prism, Five Man Electrical Band
Some more but I can't remember.
