Hey Stoopid - why not a hit like Trash

Hello,
Hey Stoopid was the first album by Alice that really caught me. How come it never took off in the same way that Trash did just a few years beforehand. I see it as being a much stronger album. Any thoughts? Was the changing music scene the main thing that stopped it from being a great seller like Trash?

Both records have only three songs on them that are worthy but Trash, I believe had more MTV backing then Stoopid...

Yes that awful crap called grunge. and by the time TLT came out it was all you heard...I hated those grunge years and those bands

I think it was a combination of factors:
1) As has already been mentioned, "Grunge" was starting to take over the music scene.
2) Poison was a much more accessible single than Hey Stoopid. For one thing, I think Poison is a much better song than Hey Stoopid. It also had a more universally-appealing theme than Hey Stoopid did. In conclusion, Trash had a much more appealing single for the masses.
3) Trash had Desmond Child who was great at writing hit songs and singles.

I concur,with glamprincess,Poison was much more accessible,and i do feel that Hey Stoopid was a bad choice for the first single.If Feed or Loaded Gun had been the lead off single,i think the Cd would of gone gold.I have had so many people over the years at my work tell me,they love that song from "Wayne's World".and most were either non -fans or casual at best.....

Good call. I saw Poison way more than any Hey Stoopid video on the music video stations. Much Music played Love's A Loaded Gun a few times then it was gone it seemed.

Trash did very well for Alice. Mabye it was like "Muscle Of Love" having to follow "Billion Dollar Babies".
Between the two I like "Hey Stoopid" more than I like "Trash".

crap video and single (hey stoopid)
preachy songs
the SHEEP* of the world were pointed elsewhere instead of towards this album like they were with trash (like to NIRVANA)
*- people in flocks who let a few or one person sway the own decisions

grunge.
even in the space of a few years the time between trash and hey stoopid saw a massive musical shift towards touards grunge.
alice once quoted years ago - music moves around in circles but it allways comes back to original rock.
he is spot on.

Actually, in Canada (where you are from), I think it did.

Yes, that is what I meant. There were way better songs on the Hey Stoopid album than the title song so it should not have been the single. I agree that Feed My Frankenstein or Love's a Loaded Gun would have been better choices. Since HS sold over 350,000 copies in the US, I think a better choice for single could have meant that HS could have gone gold in the US. Also, I didn't like the video for the single HS all that much. The Poison video was sexy and had much more universal appeal too.

Yes, it's true that a lot of albums that didn't go gold in the US went gold in Canada. I believe Constrictor and Raise Your Fist and Yell went gold in Canada for instance, even though they didn't in the US.

Gold record sales in Canada are WAY LESS than in USA for obvious reasons I'm not sure BUT I think it went gold in it's first week. I remember seeing an article in the Toronto sun that said it went gold for sure though. As for when that was like 15 + years ago so give a kid a break....

Well, of course. In the US, gold is 500,000 units sold. In Canada, gold is 50,000 units sold because Canada's population is 10% of the US's population and so a gold album in Canada is 10% of the units sold in the US.
