What's all the hatred for Dirty Diamonds?

Post by TeresofBlood » Sat Jul 19, 2008 2:54 am

I bought it a couple months ago and dismissed it as decent, but not great a couple months ago. I've listened to it a couple times since and it is really growing on me. In comparing it to ACAS, a lot of people are calling it crap. I also see a great deal of people who love albums like Zipper and Flush.

I personally think that Flush is Alice's worst album. Zipper, like DD has some good songs on it, but isn't particularly good either. I think the best songs on Zipper are not as good as the best songs on DD.

WOMD - Good song. Enjoyable, not great.
Perfect - Hilarious lyrics. Very witty. Certainly a highlight for me.
You Make Me Wanna - Typical 80s style Alice. Again good, but not great.
Dirty Diamonds - Good tune, except for the chorus.
Saga of Jesse Jane - A really nice listen and Alice's typical hilarious lyrics. Another highlihght.
Sunset Babies - Generic 80s style Alice. Not bad, just bland.
Pretty Ballerina - Interesting. Not bad, not memorable.
Run Down the Devil - Really solid, cool and fun song. Best hook on the album.
Steal that Car - Classic Alice sound. Very fun track.
Six Hours - Nice ballad about time paaing by. Seems like a subject very personal to Alice.
Your Own Worst Enemy - A lowlight for me. Sounds like generic 80s Alice.
Zombie Dance - Really eerie, cool and unique track for Alice.

All in all to 6 great tracks, 3 good tracks and 3 so-so tracks. The instrumentation is varied, interesting and entertaining. I just want to know what people see as so bad about this album.

Like I said, I rate this above almost every 80s Alice album.

Dirty Diamonds was my favorite album of all in 2005. Next to Constrictor and Raise Your Fist And Yell (when I was a teen), I've never felt a connection to an album like I do with DD. It wasn't because the songs were good or bad (but they were mostly good) it was because it was the soundtrack to my Summer months outside. I had that album going daily for a good four month period; in the car, on the headphones, in the garage, at the lake, by the firepit... not being obsessed really, but just letting the music play.
If I may put forward a slice of personal colostomy...

Of Alice's later efforts this is my favorite. While nothing groundbreaking - this is just a really fun album.

I think DD is really cool. I actually prefer it over The Eyes Of Alice Cooper. It's got some really good tunes on it. Sunset Babies, Steal That Car and Your Own Worst Enemy are my faves.

WOMD, DD, Sunset Babies and Pretty Ballerina are all better than anything on ACAS. There are some I really don't like on there as well. ACAS simply doesn't have the highs and lows of DD, IMHO.

Compare Pretty Ballerina with the ACAS ballads which are the weakest part of the new CD. I will conceed the first half of DD is much better than the second half, just like ACAS.

'Dirty Diamonds' is an album of two halves for me. Everything up to and including 'Pretty Ballerina' is ace, and everything beyond that is filler, and either average (Run Down the Devil, Zombie Dance) or just plain poor (Steal That Car, Your Own Worst Enemy).

Alice, you are not a car thief. Get over it :nono:

I don't think any of us quote "hate," DD....But like Eyes it has more tracks that it seems other bands could do. I mean stuff like Zombie Dance, Perfect, Saga of Jesse Jane, Run Down the Devil off of Diamonds, and Be With You Awhile, This House is Haunted, Detroit City, The Song That Didn't Rhyme off Eyes are all tracks only Alice can do....But the other songs I think most bands like Cheap Trick, Paramore, Deep Purple, and Velvet Revolver could have made. There Still good songs though and I think they are good albums.

I absolutely HATE and LOATHE Dirty Diamonds. The only decent (and remotely Alice song) is 'Your own worst enemy".

I have tried and tried so hard to like it - but its awful. Pure Hell. Very painful to listen to.

I SOOOO hope the new stuff is better. ;)

When it was comming out I was all excited about it after hearing Alice preview Zombie Dance on the radio I had high hopes for it. When I got it I liked it better than "Eyes" as time when on it didn't hold up as well at least to me and I ended up liking "Eyes" better that doesn't mean there arent great songs on DD like -- Dirty Diamonds, Sunset Babies, Zombie Dance, The Saga Of Jesse Jane, But some of the songs to me are rather generic like Your Own Worst Enemy, Steal that Car, You Make Me Wanna.

Just over time "Eyes" has held up much better to me. I still like DD as I like ALL of Alices albums.
