The great Alice lyrics
Forgetting the music for a second, what Alice lyrics stand out on their own.
Bob Dylan once said that Alice was an overlooked songwriter, so what are the great Alice lyrics?
No More Mister Nice Guy is one that springs to mind for me
I used to be such a sweet, sweet thing
'Til they got a hold of me
I opened doors for little old ladies
I helped the blind to see
I got no friends 'cause they read the papers
They can't be seen with me
And I'm gettin' real shot down
And I'm feeling mean
No more Mister Nice Guy
No more Mister Clean
No more Mister Nice Guy
They say he's sick, he's obscene
I got no friends 'cause they read the papers
They can't be seen with me
And I'm gettin' real shot down
And I'm, I'm getting mean
No more Mister Nice Guy
No more Mister Clean
No more Mister Nice Guy
They say he's sick, he's obscene
My dog bit me on the leg today
My cat clawed my eyes
Ma's been thrown out of the social circle
And dad has to hide
I went to church incognito
When everybody rose,
The Reverend Smith
He recognized me
And punched me in the nose
He said No more Mister Nice Guy
No more Mister Clean
No more Mister Nice Guy
He said Your sick, You`re obscene
No more Mister Nice Guy
No more Mister Clean
No more Mister Nice Guy
He said Your sick, You`re obscene

I've always been most impressed with particular lyrics from 'Pain' - tho I often looked upon Alice as quite a pantomine - like character with darkness, the lyrics in that song hit something a bit more to the bone. And since this is a song out of the hundreds he's recorded that stands out like that makes it makes it all that more better.

A great thread steven, but there are so many lyrics aren't there?!steven_crayn wrote:Forgetting the music for a second, what Alice lyrics stand out on their own.

I totally agree about No More Mr Nice Guy, which clearly came from a time when Alice was riding along on the crest of a wave - clearly he could do no 'wrong' on Billion Dollar Babies - so too Generation Landslide, (as glam suggests) pretty much summed up and statemented that whole anti-authority schtick that was going on at the time.
I got to thinking about - not just the lyrics, but the way he delivers them.
Two - out of so many - that stand apart in his use of sarcasm (You're A Movie) and attitude (I Love America) are songs that really nail it 'theatrically' but really could do with being performed 'live', I think?
Quite a guy! he really is QUITE a guy.
When life becomes more real than children's games
Or we've become too old to play them
My God.
Or we've become too old to play them
My God.
I agree delivery is EVERYTHING cause if it's off so is the song
Song like steal that car for example the versus are fine then the chorus comes in with all it's punchy pop and just ruins the song IMHO but then again...
Just think how bad SKELETONS in the closet would be without that echo wisp that alice uses there .

I think you phrased it so much more concisely than I did!
See! Delivery IS everything!
Cheers smano!

My favorite song from Constrictor by FAR!
Life And Death Of The Party
You walk into the room, everybody stares
The talking stops, there's a silence there
The room is yours, you own it now
You're in control and everybody down here knows
You got a place in my heart, I don't want you there
But you come and you go, like a millionaire
You take a walk right across my soul
You're in control and everybody down here knows
You're the life and the death of the party
You got my heart right by the throat
You're the life and the death of the party
When the stage lights rise
You start and stop the show
You love me bad, you love me good
You're unimpressed, that's understood
I lost it all, you knew I would
You're in control and everybody down here knows
You're the life and the death of the party
You got my heart right by the throat
You're the life and the death of the party
And with your head held high
You start and stop the show
It's just one night
It's just one time
It's just one hotel room
It's just another dream
That can't come true
You're the life and the death of the party
You got my heart right by the throat
You're the life and the death of the party
And when the stage lights rise
You start and stop the show
Yeah
You got my heart right by the throat
You're the life and the death of the party
And with your head held high
You start and stop the show
You're the life and the death of the party
You got my heart right by the throat
You're the life and the death of the party
And when the stage lights rise
You start and stop the show
Yeah
