A GREAT record but that is show-biz-theatrical-camp all the way. I can hardly watch the TV special its just so dated lyrically as well as visually

I gotta admit... a few times a year, if that song comes up in shuffle, I kind of enjoy it. Not saying it's a good song or amazing lyrics, but Alice's voice in it and the overall just kinda makes me laugh...in a good way.

Actually - according to Michael Bruces' book "No More Mr. Nice Guy" the song has a history that goes back to the ACG days when they all lived together. Don't recall the actual detail as written right now - so don't hang me! - but this guy, a 'cowboy' or 'redneck' type, would dance around the place singing a similar lyric, while swigging from a bottle. So, somehow that song idea stayed with Alice for a good few years before he used it, (some would say, 'why did he bother' lol). A bit like 'Sex, Death and Money', a phrase often dropped into interview in the ACG days, but not used as a song until many years later.

Actually, because he sings it in that kind of 'faux-Elvis' style, I imagine there is a 'connection', with him recording the song and meeting Elvis, which I understand he says he has done several times - more than once anyway!

Just because he doesn't remember it NOW doesn't mean he wasn't looking for a direction THEN. All speculation obviously...but what's true now doesn't necessarily negate a previous truth.

And I've always found that line to be a prime example of Alice's brand of sick but essentially harmless humour, hard-boiled down into twelve words.

I really am not at all qualified to suggest if Alice was 'lying' not; which is why I used the words "possibly", "appeared (to me)" and punctuated with a question mark.

But, as Not So Perfect also suggested; the fact that his memory doesn't serve him so well now - as regards this period - it does not follow that he did not know what he was doing at the time?

If I could ask you if you have read a particular magazine interview* with Bob Greene (I think, prior to the release of Constrictor), you may want to reconsider. In it, I think Alice expresses some considerable concern over the fact that he had reached a point where he had released six albums "that nobody bought", and so it was upon this basis that I made my suggestion.

Surely by the sixth album where he has not managed repeat his previous success he would be 'striving hard', wouldn't he? Just a thought.

Not that anyone will be too interested in this; (except perhaps to say "Proof, if proof were needed"), there are at least 21 cover versions of this song since 1957 and Warren Smith is credited with the original.
