Re: Michael Jackson gets the credit.....
You know, just to add to the 'which came first?' topic going on here, though not related to the late M.Jackson...a couple of weeks ago, I was watching one of those "Entertainment" shows..where they review the stars, shows, etc...and it was said that Britney 'the train wreck' Spears got a terrible review in the UK... Then they showed pics/video of her in her show and she was wearing a "Ringmaster" type of outfit... I don't know, the colors were off (black and red or visa versa etc..) but all I could think was, "Of course she bombed: Alice did that look years ago and the UK loves him!" (not to say the US doesn't, but he has (now and historically) a wild UK audience/following!)
..We're finally alone. Wash the dust from your hair now, I don't care if you ever get home..
Re: Michael Jackson gets the credit.....
Nice one Andy Of course! Alice using James Randi was somewhat before Jacko features.Absolutely (although Alice Cooper used an illusionist long before Jackson did).

Interesting point. Madonna has also worn a "ringmaster" type outfit complete with tophat....and we all know how Madonna has used an electric chair as well...BellaDonna wrote:You know, just to add to the 'which came first?' topic going on here, though not related to the late M.Jackson...a couple of weeks ago, I was watching one of those "Entertainment" shows..where they review the stars, shows, etc...and it was said that Britney 'the train wreck' Spears got a terrible review in the UK...
michael started using famed illusionist franz harary in 1983. alice used him in 1986. it works both ways.
Never knew that - which illusions did Harary work on with Alice?

Given the year mentioned, and the name sounding familiar from a conversation about said illusion, I think he worked with the "Teenage Frankenstein" monster on the "Nightmare Returns" tour.

Speaking of the "Teenage Frankenstein" monster, click this... Best enjoyed with the sound off.

You're not kidding. We took our (then) small children to the performance - ON MY WIFE'S birthday - in 1995. Hard to tell who was more traumatized - the kids or us.
Either way, I saw this, and I knew immediately that this was either THE prop, or made by the same guy. The arms are what convinced me.

Yeah, the arms are exactly what made me look closer, and then the "box with a skirt" shape of the body.
Tho, the head and sizing looked a bit off. I don't think it's THE prop.

Sutch & Hawkins may have had a touch of the novelty about them but not Arthur Brown 'Fire' was a truly disturbing visual performance and a truly great record.BUZZCOCK wrote:'No one took theatrics to the extreme that Alice Cooper (band and solo) did.'
I agree 100%, indeed if you look at any footage of Brown, Hawkins or Sutch, its clear that it was more for novelty value than a genuine desire to expand theatrics in rock music!
Alice took it all to a new level though no doubt about that.

I think it was Strawberry Fields that was credited as the first real creative pop video though Elected even though some years later has a good case.Gunner wrote:I suppose 'Rain' (Beatles) was the first promo in a way, but pop video evolved and you have to say that if we are talking about developing 'visuals' in pop/rock then Alice Cooper HAS to be pretty much at the top in terms of influence. The 'Elected' film was innovative, I suppose the next one was 'Bohemian Rhapsody' by Queen, but to call 'Jackson' creator of pop video is inaccurate propaganda and we all know that here.

Just going back to Lord Sutch, the track Til The Following Night is awesome !a Joe Meek production , Meek did some great work , the sound of the coffin lid opening was lifted by Jimmy Page for Zeps Whole lotta Love !
In Alice's defence none of the fore runners really had Alice's song writing skills hence they remained on the fringes !
The only man to really challenge his position would be Bowie ,but he opperated in completely different circle's ,and makeup aside was a totally different type of artist .
