Michael Bruce is the guitarist, keyboardist and main songwriter for the original Alice Cooper band. He released his first solo album in 1975, with a mini-album coming in 1983. After that everything went quiet before the internet helped revive his career in 2001. In 1996 Michael released his autobiography 'No More Mr Nice Guy', co-written with Billy James (AntBee). You can find out more about that in the books section.

'In My Own Way' is Michael's first solo album recorded in 1974 while the original band was still technically together. It was released in 1975 but failed to chart. The album was recorded with the two musicans, Dolan and Mashbir, who toured and recorded with the original band in 1973. Mick Mashbir was an old friend of Michael's and had been a bandmate in his pre-Alice Cooper band 'The Wildflowers'.

The original vinyl was deleted fairly quickly and the only CD issue (in it's original form) on One Way Records is also hard to find.

Gene Cornish and Dino Danelli played together in 'The (Young) Rascals' who had had nine singles reach the Billboard top 20 in the mid-sixties including three #1s.

Alice Cooper himself adds vocals to 'As Rock Rolls On'

'Friday On My Mind' is a cover of a song by 'The Easybeats' Band members and songwriters Harry Vanda and George Young went on to produce the early AC/DC albums, as George is the older brother of AC/DC's Angus and Malcolm Young.

'So Far, So Good' is written by Noddy Holder and Jim Lea of Slade. Slade had recorded their own version of the song on their 'Slade In Flame' album in 1974.

"The track ('Morning Song') was never really finished because we weren't going to use the song on the album, and so we never really finished it. It wasn't on the original album which is why it's listed as a "bonus track" on the 'In My Own Way' CD. The vocals are done by Russell Morris from Austrailia, who was working with me on lyrics. One Way Records asked me if we had any more tracks from those sessions and I tossed that in for good measure." - Michael Bruce.

'Rock Rolls On' is a mini-LP released in 1983. It features only three new songs, the others all being from his first solo album. Because of this we can make an educated guess that the additional musicians listed on in the credits play on these new songs. It's said that the older songs are re-recorded and remixed, but the presence of Cornish and Danelli on the credits would suggest they are only remixed.

Alice Cooper's backing vocals on 'As Rock Rolls On' have been removed in this new mix.

In 2001 Michael Bruce was begining to stir from many years of obscurity. The advent of the internet now allowed fans to track down their original idols much more easily and Michael, seeing that there were many people still interested in his career, started making select appearances in the US, which led to a short UK tour and an appearance at the Alice Cooper UK convention Sickcon. He hadn't been playing seriously for some years and spent a long time relearning songs he originally wrote and working on regaining his guitar skills. The shows cold be eratic, with one show being wonderful, and the next being rather less than perfect, but what was clear when he played is how much his guitar sound influenced the overall sound of the original band.

While in Europe Icelandic superfans Silli and Ingó Geirdal invited Michael to travel to Iceland and perform a set of classic Cooper songs with them, which they recorded and was later released as 'Halo Of Ice'. Further recordings with the brothers were self-released a few years later as 'The Second Coming Of Michael Bruce' and while this album is good, that is probably the better of the two.

The original Wildflowers singles featuring Michael Bruce.

Michael Bruce and Neal Smith are the only original band members to have appeared on recordings before 'Pretties For You'. Michael was a member of a band called 'The Wildflowers' who in 1965 recorded four songs - "On A Day Like Today", "A Man Like Myself", "More Than Me", and "Moving Along With The Sun". "A Man Like Myself "and "On a Day Like Today" which also feature Mick Mashbir, later to join the Alice Cooper band on the 'Billion Dollar Babies' Tour.

'The Wildflowers' were completed by Mike Miller on drums, Gary Dockery on bass and Gary Gilbert on keyboards with Michael playing guitar and singing. The four tracks were released on two singles on the Aster label. The first release was in 1966 and featured 'On A Day Like Today' and 'A Man Like Myself' while the second came out in 1967 featuring 'More Than Me' and 'Moving Along With The Sun'.

Outside of these, the Alice Cooper albums, and the records listed, above Michael has only appeared on two other albums.

In 1997 Michael, Dennis Dunaway, Glen Buxton, and Neal Smith all appeared on Antbee's 'Lunar Musik'. Antbee is Billy James, who co-wrote Michael Bruce's autobiography 'No More Mr Nice Guy'.

In 1999 Michael appeared on Bruce Cameron's 'Midnight Daydream' album which also featured Neal Smith along with Jack Bruce, Billy Cox and Buddy Miles. Michael plays on 'I Want To Be Late' and 'Falling Up A Mountain' with Neal. Cameron's career was short as within a month of the albums release he committed suicide.

In 2001 he appeared on a new version of 'Sick Things' with Antiseen that can be found of the tribute album 'Thinking Of Alice - A Tribute To Alice Cooper'

He's listed as appearing twice on the 2010 tribute album 'Remember The Coop! A Tribute To Alice Cooper's Killer Classics' but to the best of my knowledge these recordings are taken from the Icelandic CD's mentioned above.

It's also worth mentioning there was another musician called Michael Bruce around during the late 6os/early 70s who played with Bob Seger, Teegarden and Van Winkle, and others. This is NOT our Michael Bruce.
